A hypothetical: Imagine I held a magic wand that could make AI systems improve in all the following ways:
- More environmentally friendly
- Less capturable by a few large corporations
- Less built on "plagiarism machine" foundations
- More reasonable and capable of making judgements which are explainable, accountable, and more accurate
- More participatory and open
However, we are still left in our present socioeconomic system.
Should I wave the magic wand and improve things, or does improving AI in these ways still make the world worse?
@cwebber I think that the points make sense even in actual socioeconomic system. ActivityPub worked, overall.
However, the wand would just make era of "slave AI" sooner to come, which makes me sad. Anyway, I am not sure if we would be ever ready to avoid that era...

@haskal every single one of these things is required for accepting ssh connections with sshd, which is a ridiculously specialized use case that is well-understood to expose you to attack. i can therefore understand some degree of complexity in their protection mechanisms. what i don't understand is why it would not be made painfully obvious how to build just the client program and not avoid having to incur any of this in the first place

The AI companies _want_ you to believe that it's "rogue AI" because that overhypes what their broken statistical text generation software does and mystifies it and makes it appear magical.
It's not magic. It's just badly made software.
