German discount supermarket chain Lidl notified customers in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands that attackers stole their personal information in a breach at a service provider.
Vinton Cerf, widely considered one of the "fathers of the Internet" for his role in co-creating the TCP/IP protocols, will step down from his role as Google’s chief internet evangelist next week, Techcrunch reports. The character The Architect in the movie Matrix Reloaded was apparently based on Cerf and looks remarkably like him, btw.

I smiled when I read this because a few years back I was on a flight home to DC from San Francisco, and I learned as I was waiting to board that Vint was going to be sitting right next to me on the flight. Alas, my hopes were dashed when Vint -- who was flying standby -- got bumped again after graciously bumping himself from previous flight. He got pretty upset at this, and I was bummed, too. I posted about it at the time on Xitter, and someone replied: "It's ok, I'm sure he'll just automatically find another route."
Every year, the HDMI Consortium meets with hardware manufacturers to plan where to place HDMI ports on monitors. Through a rigorous series of testing, they ensure that each monitor has its port locations optimized to be impossible to plug the HDMI cable in without turning the whole monitor around and eyeballing the port like some kind of spaceship docking procedure.
When they have all agreed on the best location, they go out for pizza.
I am not opposed to healthy scientific inquiry into the supernatural as such.
However, "shooting the strange entity to see what happens" does not strike me as the best approach.

@afewbugs Did you ever get an actual answer? I have one, though I'm also a bit of a hack. Mostly just make sure the plastic isn't all crispy from sitting in the sun and that whatever you're going to be screwing into is right behind the fascia so you don't end up warping the plastic when securing the blind. Apart from that, I don't thiink you should have any issues...if that's still helpful...
@GuerillaOntologist it is, thank you. Mastodon in general has been far more helpful here than any search engine 😀 Consensus seems to be ensure there's no asbestos behind (there isn't) and go slowly and carefully with a very sharp bit
business protip: if any task is discovered and needs to be done, demonstrate your professionalism by asking why it isn't done already. The most successful business leaders honed this skill in the back of their parents' cars.
@isocat I still need LinkedIn because I use it as a hookup app to pick up chicks.
@Alice They except you're entreatie's?
People who protest, people who show the fuck up to city council meetings, people who write letters and make calls, people who organize are achieving victories all over the US. One data center after another is getting canceled, one ICE "warehouse" concentration camp after another. We've forced the mutiny of preverts to backtrack and change tactics. We've beaten them in court countless times.
We get to choose victory or defeat.

At the same time, I don't feel like I trust what's being said in favor of Davis and against Dreher because it seems to be coming from the part of the left that sometimes gets ... upset about questions.
@ohmu On social media side, Dreher's platform says
"Help pass legislation to ban addictive feeds, endless scroll, and other problematic features of kids’ social media accounts, without requiring kids to provide more sensitive age-verification data to these companies"
The last part sounds good but then again most of the supporters of the addictive social media bill this year claimed that it wouldn't require age verification (even though the language in practice meant that companies would do age verification). So, it's worth probing, but definitely grounds for concern
Also his platform has
"Work on data privacy legislation that gives all users the right to opt-out of certain kinds of data collection and to put strict timeframes on others"
No no no no, opt-out is not a good basis for privacy legislation. Even the Bad Washington Privacy Act was at least partially opt-in! Disappointing.
And, not doing anything to counter the idea that he's big-tech friendly.
@pndc @neil @bencurthoys no, im not falling for the "outside jurisdiction" argument.
No-one need fall for anything; there's a perfectly reasonable discussion to be had about the reach of any country's powers.

New: The LAPD, the third-largest police department in the United States, let its contract with surveillance giant Flock expire this weekend, citing "serious concerns" with civil liberties and privacy.
Flock said it was surprised by the move, but it's not clear if the company's license plate readers will immediately cease recording.

"Der größte Anteil der hitzebedingten Sterbefälle fällt auf die Altersgruppe über 75 Jahre. Schätzungsweise machen sie 83 Prozent der durch Hitze Verstorbenen aus (4.270 Fälle). "
Damit dürfte die Frage, warum die Regierung nichts tut, beantwortet sein. Die Rentenkasse ist denen wichtiger.

@otfrom @CowboyWho Idk if I'd say that Nog turned out okay
Also Miles once raised a completely feral daughter, but then it un-happened because of a causality paradox
@researchfairy @otfrom I hate when Star Trek "j/k lol"s their way out of a hole with some sort of causality paradox type thing.
