If you're not careful, the Secret Service will soon be on your porch. "On the same day that #Ring announced this partnership, 404 Media reported that ICE, the Secret Service, and the Navy had access to Flock’s network of cameras. By partnering with Ring, #Flock could potentially access footage from millions more cameras." https://techcrunch.com/2025/10/16/amazons-ring-to-partner-with-flock-a-network-of-ai-cameras-used-by-ice-feds-and-police/

Agencies that use Flock can request that Ring doorbell users share footage to help with "evidence collection and investigative work."

Flock is the most late-stage American capitalism spin on 1984. It’s not the government who puts up cameras to keep an eye on the public; it’s a for-profit company who charges the gov't for their services, and works with other massive for-profit companies to convince people to put up their own cameras to spy on themselves and their neighbors.

Every time I tell someone about Flock, I feel like a conspiracy theorist except it’s true, and they’re not hiding it.

When I looked into IP cameras a few years back, seeing that merely a few chip vendors are involved and tons of whitelabeling businesses exist, at some point I read about " #racial detection" and such.

Do not be surprised to see this from #Flock now.

US11030892B1 - Method and system for capturing and storing significant surveillance images
- Google Patents

A method and system for capturing and filtering surveillance images are described. A processor detects motion of an object in a field of view and then generates a plurality of images in response to detecting motion of the object in the field of view. A first filter is then applied to the plurality of images and later, the one or remaining images based on the first filter are stored in a memory device. In response to a triggering event, an energy conserving processor is activated from a sleep mode of operation where the energy conserving processor applies a second filter to the remaining images from the first filter. The energy conserving processor assigns a confidence score to one or more images matching the second filter. With the second filter, the energy conserving processor selects fewer images for RF transmission to a remote image analyzer, resulting in increased power savings.

@scottsthoughts

If you have friends in Cambridge, MA, please make them aware that the city has plans to install 16 Flock cameras in the near future.

There was a hearing last month about whether to maybe rethink the decision, but without significant pushback it's likely the cameras will go in anyway.

I wrote about this in the thread here: https://better.boston/@athorn/115215334409507677

"Flock Safety, whose drones were once reserved for police departments, is now offering them for private-sector security, the company announced today, with potential customers including including businesses intent on curbing shoplifting.Companies in the US can now place Flock's drone docking stations on their premises. If the company has a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration to fly beyond visual line of sight (these are becoming easier to get), its security team can fly the drones within a certain radius, often a few miles. #Flock cameras says that it has “paused its operations with federal agencies” because their system has been used for ICE enforcement.

“Pausing” operations means that they HAVE BEEN ALLOWING IT until now.

Flock makes money per query. They are incentivized to allow “law enforcement” types to query their systems for as many things as they want, including tracking people down for violating anti-abortion laws, suspected “immigration” issues, and who knows what else.

Your tax dollars are paying for this. Flock cameras should be taken down.

"How to Pump the Brakes on Your Police Department’s Use of Flock’s Mass Surveillance License Plate Readers"

https://www.aclu.org/news/privacy-technology/how-to-pump-the-brakes-on-your-police-departments-use-of-flocks-mass-surveillance-license-plate-readers

"Unlike a targeted ALPR camera system that is designed to take pictures of license plates, check the plates against local hot lists, and then flush the data if there’s no hit, Flock is building a giant camera network that records people’s comings and goings across the nation, and then makes that data available for search by any of its law enforcement customers. Such a system provides even small-town sheriffs access to a sweeping and powerful mass-surveillance tool, and allows big actors like federal agencies and large urban police departments to access the comings and goings of vehicles in even the smallest of towns. And every new customer that buys and installs the company’s cameras extends Flock’s network, contributing to the creation of a centralized mass surveillance system of Orwellian scope. Motorola Solutions, a competitor to #Flock, is pursuing a similar business model."

"The company’s cameras are no longer just recording our comings and goings — now, using AI in ways we have long warned against, the system is actively evaluating each of us to make a decision about whether we should be reported to law enforcement as potential participants in organized crime."

"All these are variants on the same theme: using the camera network not just to investigate based on suspicion, but to generate suspicion itself."
