@huwr @decryption That's why I always buy VWs: they're not great value these days, but they're the car-est of cars on the road, with minimal techno-BS in the way. If they'd only sell an electric wagon in Australia I'd buy it tomorrow...
@layoutSubviews @huwr the VW ID4 Pro looks like it is closest to meeting all my criteria to be honest, only downside is the glass roof, but that's the least annoying of all the annoying things in other cars

@timixretroplays oooooof. Yeah give the boards some heat, 50°C should be helpful
@timixretroplays or your iron has fallen out of temperature regulation, do you have a thermistor that can measure its tip?
Like, what even is this? It's like no board I try soldering a thing to actually takes the solder. It wasn't like this the last time I wanted to do a big batch of soldering stuff. Iron is the same, solder is the same, some of the boards were made in the last week but plenty of them weren't.
Is it just too cold a day to solder? Are the boards too cold? Should I be warming parts on the 3D printer before attempting to solder them?

Flûte.
(Je viens de trouver la flûte de ma progéniture sous mon dos…)
@nartagnan on fait mieux comme coussin.
This just showed up in my inbox, and well … all my posts in the Barenaked Ladies newsgroup in 1999 and 2000 are still there.
This is one of the most in-depth revivals of Usenet archives I’ve seen. It’s actually kind of scary how much this resurfaces.
@ernie trying to figure out if I want to pay $10 and glut myself on searches for one month.
@decryption My parents' car is such a cram-the-features-in-without-a-thought car. The door handles don't even work. You have to press a button near the door handle, not the door handle. It also yells at you for not paying attention while you're driving. $95K shit box imho

Seems like a good time to post quote from Stewart & Norvig (3rd edition) of events in 1997.
"Kasparov said that he felt a “new kind of intelligence” across the board from him. Newsweek magazine described the match as “The brain’s last stand.” The value of IBM’s stock increased by $18 billion."
@timnitGebru very relevant today
@charliejane I can see that. Wishing you nothing but the best with your project! Sorry I was a wet blanket.
@phaedral it's all good 😛
Just a bunch of anxious monkeys freaking out about sand eating their bananas.
@kf totally... and yet... some of these was highly referenced in other media and just talked about in many spaces!
@charliejane may I ask where this screenshot is from?
@datn Instagram!
got a list of cars from carsales that are under $55k (i dont want to spend more than $50k, but I can probably haggle down to $50k from $55k) and have more than 400km range and have driver seat & mirror memory - will fill in the rest of the specs later
@decryption
I can vouch for the Kona Premium 2026 but Hybrid model. I do love it.
@charliejane for my own observance, I added Star Trek Zero Point to a pull sheet at my local comics shop

Question – what OS should I install?
I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e with only 2 cores, 4 threads, and 4 GB of RAM. I'm looking for OS recommendations that would be suitable for this machine.
I'm considering Debian, possibly as a command-line installation, to see if I could manage without a GUI. I've also thought about something more exotic like OpenBSD. Regardless, I'd mainly like to use this machine as a portable typewriter. Importantly, I need TTS (text-to-speech) because of my personal accessibility needs—a screen reader is essential.
I enjoy experimenting with distros and learning through hands-on experience.
Any advise and tips are welcome!

@debby Add a tally for Debian. Any distro with CLI will do fine on there, but Debian is easy to work with
What the hell is going wrong with my soldering tonight? It's been a hot minute since I've done any, but it shouldn't be *this* terrible all of a sudden. I don't think I'm doing anything different but it's like the pads are refusing to 'wet' at all and I'm having to carefully trace the iron right around in order to draw solder around each pin. I'm even having trouble getting the solder to melt onto the tip of the iron. I've never had it misbehave this much at me before.
