Fireside Fedi Panel (Very Low Quality Recording)
Just sent 2 (partial, very drafty) chapters to my book editor. This is good, I guess?
This is very very different than any other kind of writing I've ever done. I would enjoy it more if I could somehow stop doing everything else and just focus on book-writing, but yeah no that's just never happening. Need to figure out how to squeeze book-writing in with *everything else* more regularly.
In any case, I sure hope this week goes more smoothly than last week

@internetarchive and thanks for bringing attention to the use of AI in climate change mitigation. As someone who worked in climate data for four years, I can say that LLMs provide a lot of help in identifying and comparing projects for reducing emissions and adapting to a changing world. ClimateGPT looks like a great project to share.
@evan @skobkin @internetarchive Also thanks for wasting gigawatts on generating images of cats hunting mammoths.
The only things more climate unfriendly than LLMs are India and China burning tons of coal every single day.
I found the best book: a 1963 dictionary of Italian hand gestures
@ai6yr calm down.
I think I'll return to my DualSense synthesizer thing soon. It's been too long and it sounds really good honestly. Along with a few things, I'll be open sourcing it as well.

this is the problem:
abuse by officials
exhibit A of the stakes, of which there will be many more until all these "but i have nothing to hide" morons realize

@bscross32 Oh yay!
@markwyner Fine... qwerty123 or zxcvb123 will work instead. Stupid data breaches!
@ai6yr calm down.
Running theory. We got a reset with Codex because they released 6 without optamizations. Now when I use it my codex isn't draining super fast anymore.
@markwyner But I have been using "blink182" and "password123" for decades, I can't remember a new password!!!

My password was unique and random, but I updated it anyway, and took the opportunity to enable 2FA as well. 😎

... starts spewing numbers. I was expecting a 4 (maybe 5?) digit pin, but it was at least 8 or possibly more digits (lost track), said very quickly. The box on the website for me to enter it *starred out* what I typed with no option to see. I listened to them repeat the numbers 3 times in a row...
... followed immediately by "goodbye!" and it hanging up, and still wasn't quite sure I had accurately typed in the pin (thankfully, I had), but holy shit that was unnecessarily stressful.
Just had to pay for something online and got a popup saying my bank needed to call me with an auth code to use the card. Normally I see an option for call *or* text & always say text. But only option was call. So it called and said "if you're expecting this call press pound." I did, then it just...
