I just wrote fan mail to a retired German conservationist. I feel like all y'all should just send someone a random piece of fan mail. Everyone likes to get a compliment every once in a while.
He answered. Told me something I had already suspected and writren a short story about. My imagination ran full steam into reality and I now believe that I am a soothsayer, a mystic, a psychic ordained from the great beyond. Gonna buy a 🔮 and set up a tent. No longer offended if someone calls me "Madame" unironically.
Some individuals are biased by having good taste. That poses a challenge for schemes of aggregating opinions. More in my latest newsletter:
@tomstafford for grant application review the idea of coming up with a score has always seemed like nonsense to me for exactly this reason. I wonder would a series of yes/no questions aggregated into a score by a common formula be better? Like "the proposed research has no fundamental errors that couldn't be easily corrected". Perhaps not.

Oof, a bunch of old accounts created from 2018 - 2022 have been hacked and are being used to post racist spam - I'm suspending and purging them as soon as they pop up but sincere apologies if you see any of it!

@nitot je le faisais et je convertissais en epub. Je crois savoir que c’est plus compliqué aujourd’hui, mais pas impossible. Il y a des moyens de contourner les obstacles. @kalindea @trimillie

Another example of the shocking inefficiency of everything involving genAI: developer claims DLSS5 "improves the character lighting model" while later mentioning that it HALVES THE FRAMERATE.
My brother in computer development, there are excellent lighting models available if you are willing to accept *doubling the frame time on a last-generation GPU*. Especially so if you're restricting yourself to foreground characters. None of them requires proprietary slop.
