I don't own a car. I take public transit everywhere, and I do think personal vehicle use has real environmental costs. But I don't think driving is inherently unethical.

I live in Seoul, and the city makes transit easy for me. That's not a virtue. It's a condition I happen to benefit from. Some people live where transit barely exists, or where it doesn't get them to work, school, or care. In those places, driving is not optional.

The same is true of flying. In parts of Europe you can cross borders by train. In island nations, or in places with weak land connections, flying may be the only realistic option. “Just fly less” means very different things in those places.

A lot of what gets called my ethical choices comes from the conditions I live in. That makes me wary of turning structural failures into personal morality. If the alternative is missing or unusable, shaming people for not choosing it solves nothing.

When environmental harm gets framed as individual moral failure, attention shifts away from the structural changes that would actually matter. It's not an accident that oil companies spent decades popularizing the idea of the personal carbon footprint.

it reminded me of ben brainard's series of videos called "welcome to the table" (started off in 2020 during the covid lockdown, now seemingly on hiatus as he's doing proper stand-up) where he acts as the federal government and the states (except hawaii) and on one hand covers the news comedically from mostly a center-left standpoint, on the other shows off each individual state's culture (most famously florida, but that's because ben lived most of his life there)

and back in his video on illinois, one of the things was about how its natives tend to pronounce the state's name as "ellinois"

Mais ils ont toujours été là, en fait.
C'est juste qu'avec la montée de l'extrême-droite dans le monde et la montée de l'IA, cela a forcé certains à affirmer leurs positions (dans un sens ou dans l'autre), les rendant plus visibles.
Les technologies ne sont pas moins acceptables qu'avant, c'est juste que maintenant on voit mieux à quoi s'en tenir.

Not my current office, but YS Wu — my boss at NRL — created a conference room in an old chemistry lab with one entire wall as a green chalkboard. Hallway to windows about 30 feet. Floor to ceiling about 15 feet.

We sometimes filled it wall to wall, to a height of six feet or so, and updated its content for weeks.

This is the reason I try to reply to every interaction I enjoy on the internet, even if it’s just a small lol or same. During the last few days I witnessed the setup of a Samsung phone with their Android flavor and a Windows 11 initial setup and wow was I not aware how bad things have gotten: the amount of dark patterns and bullshit to get people to "consent" to data mining stuff is unbelievable – and that is if they even give any option to avoid making accounts etc.

Makes it even sadder that Free Software still hasn't become Liberatory Software.
