@kate something I did first was register a personal domain, and then hook that up to my first non-Google email provider

I had to tell folks/services to start using a new non-Google email address for me anyway, this way they switch the one time to an address on my personal domain

then I'm free to change which provider that points at whenever I want without anyone needing to update their records for me again, e.g. i switched from Google to Proton, and then later from Proton to FastMail

it _is_ just a bit more technical and a bit more costly to do this depending on the domain name and your email provider, but for me the flexibility was worth it

@jdp23 @cwebber @ricci I think there is a difference though, and it largely boils down to the fact that BlueSky was not starting from scratch, could have learned from ActivityPub and fedi, and had resources incomparable to fedi at its disposal.

I don't think any of the issues BS is going through right now are a surprise. You had mentioned NaziSky issue, I and others talked about the weird construction of the protocol is in the context of all the talk of "decentralization".

I don’t use Instagram or Facebook, but many people in my social circles do. For them, it still seems to work as a way of connecting and seeing one another’s content.

Instagram content sometimes reaches even me, and then I need to find a workaround to view it. Just now, a contact shared a video about an immigrant from my home country who became homeless in Berlin and is raising funds to return home.

That’s the network effect I’m trying to describe, not an endorsement of Meta or its algorithms.

It was quite terrifying.
