@ChrisCorrigan Wow, badgers are INTENSE
@sundogplanets they dont care who knows it.
Honestly there’s so much fantastic design and engineering work going into OS 9 right now, I’m extremely excited
Growing up with the phrase “Wikipedia isn’t a valid source,” only to end up in a daily life where everyone says, “Just ask ChatGPT.”
Helpful fedi, I’m looking for iOS map app recommendations that work well in Australia including with bushwalking. I’d love one that lets me track where I’ve been.
I’m finally disentangling myself from the stupid, in this case Google maps. My tolerance for hydronym nonsense turns out to be nil.
What map apps do you use?
@kate I’ve played around with Organic Maps, but not enough to fully endorse it. Seems good for offline maps at least.
I had to go check Google’s map of Lake Ontario when I saw your comment on hydronyms. What a pack of fascist collaborators.
if you understand the purpose of matrix multiplication as an attack on the discrete log problem then the comparison to the britisb codebreaking machine patterned after the polish bomba developed by the polish mathematicians who first cracked the enigma is not a surprise at all https://zeroes.ca/@kimcrawley/117084716371861352
Given that I found an app to create slides in MarkDown: is there an open source solution, accessible to blind, to show those slides in a presentation (conference, office, etc.?
Better if it's self-hostable, but otherwise, decentralized anyways.
No idea if LibreOffice is still accessible, if it has a presentation tool - OnlyOffice is excluded, accessibility isn't optimized at all despite they speak about it. Already had a call with them but no news came since long.

... Inspire threads on AI power consumption and emissions.
I consider it a basic part of technical literacy. I wish more people understand how to look at numbers and sums and just judge plausibility quickly and easily. And it turns out, my alarm clock has been inadvertently helping me train that skill while not awake and pre caffeination...

@quixoticgeek The book “Street-Fighting Mathematics: The Art of Educated Guessing and Opportunistic Problem Solving” by Sanjoy Mahajan can be had as a free PDF from MIT Press Direct, https://direct.mit.edu/books/oa-monograph/5339/Street-Fighting-MathematicsThe-Art-of-Educated
Or as reading material to accompany the Street-Fighting Mathematics open courseware course, https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/18-098-street-fighting-mathematics-january-iap-2008/
TIL that the CTOs of Meta, Palantir, and Open AI all have commissions in the US Army as Lieutenant Colonels. Presumably for access to classified materials? https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/28/opinion/ai-power-lobbying-military-britain-east-india-company.html?unlocked_article_code=1.81A.QCsJ.Alp27s-tRfaa&smid=url-share
I thought it was time for bed but apparently The Godfather is on
#Karl meets #Kosmos. Zwischen @chch und den Freunden des Vectorlabs, die unseren Karl so schön gelasert haben, waren wir beim wohl buntesten Fest der Stadt dabei. Auf der Meile der Initiativen war teilweise kein Durchkommen mehr – da haben wir die Wartezeit natürlich gern mit Stickern, Goodies und allen Infos rund um die Frage, wie man uns gut helfen und sogar mitwirken kann, überbrückt!
@lauren
That is a valid point that is not explicitly covered by the chosen option, but the ambiguity *is* explicitly mentioned as a problem to tackle.
The winning resolution is surprisingly detailed, while also acknowledging some things will need further discussion and investigation.
It's far from the "Fuck it, all safeties off, YOLO" scenario some people picture it to be.

@ChampersBE Users are going to be pretty pissed when some court in the future demands some significant chunk of code be removed due to being in violation. The real problem is that most techies don't really have a clue about the risks they're running with that stuff. They will learn, probably the hard way.
When he finally dies, I will be driving my car through town, windows down, honking the horn, carrying a big banner saying, "Finally! Now he made America great again!".
@randahl got a bottle of champagne cooled and ready for just that very special occasion. The cork will fly in front of the US embassy
At present, there are some sewersheds reporting to WastewaterSCAN that are very high:

@kate Offline Maps might be worth checking out. I know it's good for pedestrians and cyclists in urbanized areas.
@emma Thank you! In the App Store it looks like this one is only by city or country, and sadly not Australia, but that took me to Maps.me which looks to be open source.
@madeindex thanks. Good news is that the surgery was pushed forwards a week so it’s 3 September.
Hopefully just lipoma. It’s small at least.
Also the other problem she was having seems to be resolved with a medication.
Cancer is terrible. Hopefully everything is fine.
@xexyl hoping for the best 🤞 🤞 🤞 🤞 🤞 🤞 🤞 🤞
In case you're wondering: I've been sick. That's why I haven't been tooting so much recently.
I think I'm getting over it...
@alcinnz hope you will get well soon and feel better.
@cdarwin I hate that fucking guy so god damn much.
