While Bo Hines shaped the Genius Act as Trump’s crypto council director, his family’s consulting firm took $6.3M+ from Tether. He pushed a change to the law that would primarily benefit Tether, then left to run Tether’s US arm.

Die Idee zu obigem Projekt entstand bei der offiziellen ActivityPub Conf 2019 und der Public Spaces Amsterdam mit einigen Kolleg*innen, die ALLE nicht mehr beim @ZDF [alles kaputt] sind !
Seitdem war ich bei allen Treffen.
Herr D. weiss auch sehr genau, daß ein gewisser "Rob Ennens" alle Prototypen bei github gelöscht hat. Ich führe momentan einen Rechtsstreit.
Es tut mir leid, wir haben Herrn D. das sehr oft gesagt, als er noch verantwortlich war. Es tut mir leid, das er jetzt Unkenntnis spielt.
Ich schäme mich für diese Antwort fremd. Fragt ihn doch mal konkret, was in den 8 Jahren passiert ist.
Ich bin jedenfalls sehr traurig, denn ich habe auch finanziell einen Anteil geleistet. Und viele Freiwillige viel Arbeit, die nun gelöscht ist.
Jedenfalls war es tatsächlich einfach so geplant, wie Steffen schreibt. Es sollte einfach ActivityPub in die Mediathek integriert werden.

This is the last thing we need, but it seems kike the community that lives there has no way to fight it
For the past several months, I've been watching academics become righteously angry because AI allegedly solved a bunch of difficult math problems all on its own, only for it to be revealed that it was based on stolen work from human mathematicians all along because it can't reason.
It's like the comic of the grim reaper going from door to door massacring the room's occupants, except the reaper breaks in, steals everyone's shit, cuts them down, then leaves. It's happening now with all the game decomps, years of stolen work from human teams all wrapped up in a slop-coated bow.
Journalism is failing us so hard right now. Journalistic integrity is a perpetual struggle, but in this moment of need, it's failing utterly. I've seen article after breathless article declaring this is a turning point for games, like scrappy underdogs are stealing treasure from corporate dragons.
It's just... going over everyone's heads that this is a kind of settler-colonial violence, individuals imbued with the power of the State or of Company to spread out and destroy anything in their path so it can be claimed. These corporations need not raise armies; the people volunteer themselves.
It's why I believe the defining feature of this tech, the capacity to do harm, is *the feature* that excites these people the most. I'm convinced that if AI somehow hurt no one, they would not use it. That it might produce passable work is secondary to that harm. Harm is the true product being sold.
And media is complicit. Human decomp teams were illuminated with a suspicious light at best, if they were even noticed by outlets at all.
AI decomps now dominate the discussion in a "tee-hee, what is the Big Evil Game Corp gonna do now?" framing, deliberately obscuring what's actually happening.
The laziness of a thousand wannabe journalistic influencers repeats the message over and over again, lone hackers or creatives bucking the system and taking power back for the Little Guys.
Nah, man. They're just assholes, and their mandate is to move into a space and force humanity out of it.
I consider myself a fairly compassionate & empathetic person, but the more I read about people in this particular demographic -- wealthy Gen X white men radicalized by social media & group chats -- the more I loathe them. I understand them *too well* to sympathize. They are contemptible & weak.

"They might tax some of my billions or put some mild regulatory restraints on the growth of my businesses, therefore I will endorse fascism" is not savvy. It's not clever. It's not understandable or forgivable. It's shitty, just like it looks on the surface.

Tether, Bo Hines, and NXUM
Bo Hines, President Trump’s bizarre choice [I72] to serve as the first executive director of his crypto advisory council, was among the key architects of the Genius Act, the stablecoin law signed in July 2025. Hines’ previous qualifications consisted of playing college football, losing two Congressional races, and co-owning a small consulting firm called NXUM with his father. He kept his stake in NXUM when he joined the administration.
The Wall Street Journal has now reported that weeks after Hines began working on the bill, his father and their fellow NXUM co-owner Gary Dennis met with Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino. Tether is the largest stablecoin issuer, and had the most riding on the legislation. Though NXUM previously had little involvement with the crypto sector, it pitched Tether on a “strategic lobbying” and PR campaign that has netted NXUM at least $6.3 million to date, with payments that began while Hines was still at the White House and were split three ways among the co-owners. When some Republican congresspeople stalled the bill, his father informed Dennis he’d gotten a “very worried” call from Ardoino and that Tether wanted them to “obliterate” the holdouts. Hours later, Hines sent the NXUM group chat talking points casting the legislators as “undermining the president and ... bought and paid for by democratic shills like coinbase and a16z”. When Trump brokered a deal with the holdouts weeks later, Dennis bragged to an associate, “Bo got it done.” Three weeks after the bill was signed, Hines left the White House; the following month, he was named CEO of Tether’s new US arm.
NXUM has only grown more entangled with Tether since. The consulting firm, which is pitching investors on a deal in which Tether would buy a 25% stake for $56 million, has started branding itself as the “strategic media infrastructure layer behind Tether”. It also helped launch the Fellowship PAC, which is chaired by Jesse Spiro, Tether US’s head of government affairs [Tether PAC]. The PAC is funded almost entirely by Cantor Fitzgerald, an investor in Tether and its primary US financial partner, which was previously run by now-Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The PAC has paid NXUM more than $6.5 million. ![Hines was succeeded on the crypto council by Patrick Witt, whose resume likewise featured college football and failed congressional bids [I90]. Witt took over negotiations on the Clarity Act crypto market structure bill, which recently fizzled after falling short of the votes needed for cloture [I110]. In July, the council’s deputy director, Harry Jung, stepped down to join (you guessed it!) NXUM.1 Now, Witt has left his post, presumably to collect his reward. I look forward to learning who’s paying it.
His departure adds to growing nerves in the crypto sector that the White House is losing interest. David Sacks stepped down from his combined “AI and crypto czar” role in March, and earlier this month Trump tapped Jay Clayton to become his AI czar.2 No crypto czar has been named, and the digital assets advisory council is now without a director or deputy director. The Clarity Act is dead, with little hope of being revived after the midterms.
