@snufkin_vc @dirtycommo what do they mean by the phrase "analog operating system" here, it's definitely for a digital computer...

Our core argument is that LLMs should not be regarded as reliable simulators of human participants because subtle changes to the input text can lead to very different reactions from humans and LLMs. This is also shown in our key figure below. The x axis corresponds to different moral scenarios, the y axis to the reaction if we subtly change the text of the scenario. You can see that the reactions of LLMs and humans are clearly very different for most scenarios (exact correlations in the paper).
"If AI had existed in the early aughts, we could not have accelerated Zotero's conception, because we did not know exactly what we wanted, and so could not have written coherent prompts for an LLM. Instead, it took a great deal of time and collaboration to develop a clear vision for what Zotero should be. But that slow formation led to software that was durable rather than ephemeral, with a strong foundation that could be built upon." https://newsletter.dancohen.org/archive/the-slow-formation-of-durable-software/

~700 people from the ozbargain free trial finish up this week, so i really hope at least 5% end up paying, that would be nice and I'd be back to the number of paid subscribers the sizzle had before I took my break
Many of you here will have seen Randy Pollack's 1997 paper "How to believe a machine-checked proof".
Well, 29 years later, the first paragraph of the paper is very pertinent:
"Suppose I say “Here is a machine-checked proof of Fermat’s last theorem (FLT)”. How can you use my putative machine-checked proof as evidence for belief in FLT? I start from the position that you must have some personal experience of understanding to attain belief, and to have this experience you must engage your intuition and other mental processes which are impossible to formalise."
As I cool down tonight, I'm working on the pitch to get my wife to go ahead and take me to the village after (or before) we give blood tomorrow, to lay in adequate supplies for my weekend.
She has heavy activity on Friday and Saturday both. She's gonna claim it won't be *that* heavy, and we can go to the village on Friday, and it will be fine.
The TLDR: AI coding agents are tools, not people. Just because we can communicate with them in natural language doesn’t mean we should anthropomorphize them. Instead, programmers need a clear mental model of their behavior, which requires a programming model with constraints and guarantees.

Which party leader, in your opinion, did better in the debate?
@pezmico The general consensus I've seen (from people who could actually be bothered to watch the debate) is that this has done wonders for Jack Tame's standing in the "preferred Prime Minister" stakes.
