Great piece, with as gem of an Easter egg within.
This essay by Robert Kingett flames my rage at the AI machine like thermite.
I’m just figuring out RSS, so I added his blog to my feed. Do you know if he’s here on Mastodon anywhere?

@sbrudenell @ska @thibaultmol @drew Okay, so as a woman, it's nice to get the recognition from peers, it's a form of validation and good for my project.
But as a woman online I do have to consider the threat model. There's a reason some of us don't put our heads above the parapet.
You only have to look at the harrassment some of our more popular accounts get on here for explaining tech. Other popular women literally are being stalked right now.
Read @violetblue "but he does good work"
@sbrudenell @ska @thibaultmol @drew is taking on risk by putting up a list. Which he has considered carefully, because he knows it's not just these petty petty men, but their fanboys. Some of whom love a chance to harrass and doxx someone for the slightest excuse.
For an outside example look at how JK Rowling offered funding for malicious prosecution against amnesty international.
It's not just monetary power, it's crowd power.

Trans mascs in queer spaces are a sign of a healthy community. It is a complete misunderstanding of intersectionality that they are more privileged in a mostly trans fem community than you. They're an easy target. And you know who won't be anywhere near your community if they see you going beast mode on the easiest target you can find around you? Anyone that's not a white transfem. Stop giving less leeway to the people that literally have every marginalization in common with us than you do to some random cis dudes on the street or in your community.

Tomorrow! (tentatively)
Name and shame time: I went to log into @alltrails, 1Password entered my username and password (as usual) -- and now #AllTrails has *completely locked out my browser*, apparently on the grounds of "Rapid taps or clicks".
Yes, I get that you want to get bots off your backs. *Everyone* is trying to reduce #LLMs hammering their networks for training.
But not all fast typing is bots. If you can't tell the difference between a password manager and an #LLM, you don't know what you're doing.
More concretely, if you refuse to let me log into your service, then I should probably stop paying for it...
@jducoeur @alltrails It's wild how many services just don't at all account for the possibility that their users might be using a password manager :(
Same reason HyperCard and VBnet and the Web and Linux all mean something to me. It’s devolving power. And we should pair it with open weights infra and open networking tools now, or we’ll miss the window again and never rebalance the power
@pfrazee.com I agree. I think that's going to happen outside the US, though.
Just cancelled my @1password subscription after 7 years because while they’re free to fund someone (DHH) who wants to ethnically cleanse Europe (https://www.alilleybrinker.com/blog/1password-funds-ethnic-cleansing/), I’m also free to not have my money be used for that.
If you’re on macOS/iOS, here’s how I migrated without losing any data and without any noticeable degradation in my experience¹.
> TL;DR: To migrate from 1Password, I used StrongBox to create my KeePass Database file without losing any of my data and I’m going to be using KeePassium to manage it and, separately, heylogin for authenticating with web sites in the browser.
Read on for detailed instructions:
1. Export your data from 1Password8 in 1Password Unencrypted Export (.1pux) format: https://support.1password.com/export/?mac
**Note that this is unencrypted.** DO NOT store this file in your iCloud Drive, Dropbox, etc., and remember to delete it when you’re done with the import.²
(I put it in my home folder.)
2. Download StrongBox, a native macOS client for KeePass Database files: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/strongbox-password-manager/id897283731
3. Launch StrongBox and select File → Import → 1Password → Import 1Pux and select the file you exported from 1Password.
4. Choose a strong password for your database and save the file. This is where you can save it to iCloud Drive to have your encrypted database synced between your Mac, iPhone, etc.
You could leave it there and use StrongBox but I wouldn’t recommend it. It has the best importer so that’s why I used it but the app is owned by Applause Group, which is VC-funded so it will enshittify.
The good news is that once you’ve exported your data from 1password and have your KeePass Database, it’s yours. You can use different apps to edit it, provide autofill, etc.
One of those apps is KeePassium (https://keepassium.com/) by an independent developer (Dr. Andrei Popleteev). So, to continue our guide:
5. Download KeePassium (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/keepassium-keepass-passwords/id1435127111) and open your database using that client and uninstall the VC-funded StrongBox once you’re done with the initial import).
Again, you can stop here.
But, since I had the export, I thought I’d also try heylogin – a zero-password password manager only for logins that’s based in the EU: https://heylogin.app/
They have a novel solution that integrates really well with browsers and has been working great for me so far (in the past hour) :)
So, there you have it: I had seven years of data in 1Password (actually, likely far more as I was using it before it was a subscription) and I was able to migrate away in about ten minutes. (It’s taken me longer to write this.) You don’t have to stay locked in if you don’t agree with their ethics.
Good luck! :)
(Remember to write a note and tell them why you’re cancelling and to share your own experiences in this thread.)
¹ After you import your data, go through it and check that you have everything.
² Actually delete it. Command+Backspace then right-click the Trash and Empty Bin.

The US ambassador to Israel accuses the UK Foreign Secretary of “Jew hatred” - apparently completely unaware that the UK Foreign Secretary is in fact Jewish. Both his parents fled to the UK from the Nazis - his father on the very last boat out of Ostend during the invasion of Belgium.
Most of the Foreign Secretary's other relatives perished in the Holocaust. His father's sisters miraculously survived - having fled deep into the French countryside, they were hidden by a poor farming family for the entire duration of the war.
@ai6yr processed my pomegranates. I did in fact have to remove the seeds by pressing the chutney through a mesh (which had forgotten that I had to do that last year as well). Looking into juicers now for next years crop.
@leiawelsh have you had the email with all the links & stuff?

Remake of "Cat People" but instead of a cute young woman turning into a homicidal panther, she transforms into an orange house cat who just wants to cuddle and knock things off shelves

I've had many encounters with problematic on that server.
They're in my bottom five, along with kolektiva and c.im, though I haven't personally blocked them, yet. Possibly because I haven't seen their nonsense if they were blocked by our server (likely).
