This is a Ruckers mother-and-child virginal—a 17th-century keyboard instrument with a second, smaller instrument built into it, tuned an octave higher. The “child” could be pulled out to play duets or set on top of the “mother” to add a jangly, buzzing color to the main sound—a Renaissance-era layering trick, centuries before mixing desks. @d_rift and like sure retaining a hash tree unconditionally alongside the filesystem entries at all times is definitely a tradeoff (although if there are users who have issues with it because they think no hashing will make things go faster or use less memory, i would love to know what use cases and requirements they have for that).

but the reason this whole thing just absolutely needs to be a kernel is because filesystem i/o as an API for application code is just a compolete fucking mess. it can stay backwards-compatible, but there are applications (like my build tool) that absolutely 100% cannot achieve any meaningful guarantees without kernel support.
