This about freedom of speech, is a very, very complex debate; "you have not the freedom from consequences / you have not the right to be heard" is very dangerous if adopted by a government; they can limitate a comedian because they talk against a politician, they could prohibit books, and escalate.
But the matter of consequences it's not politics, it's life: some parents convinced that vaccines caused authism, have not vaccinated their kid for diphtheria. And the little girl died at 4 years old, for this disease, after decades it didn't happen. So, the consequence didn't come from the State, not from European Union or USA, but from territory, nature, the world, call it as you want to.
Anti-scientific theories should remain on their own niches, not being brought to the mainstream public!
However, here comes the complexiti and as original author talked about USA, I refer to it too: in democrat government, before Twitter acquired by Musk, topics opposite to democrats were almost discouraged. Giorgia Meloni herself, Italian prime minister, said "I've been deleted from Twitter because of my opinions" - she referred when she talked about the so-called "gender theory" ultra-conservative bullshit.
And now? Now that Trump oriented everything (including social media) to far-right wing side? Here it is, the problem starts to touch us. And what's anti-scientific for us, is scientific for them. So? What should be a balanced solution? And egg watch has started for the Orange, NSW Peregrine Falcons. It could be any time in the next 4 weeks or so. Over the years the earliest first egg was 17th August (2012) and the latest was 28th October (2008, the first season in this location). Last year the date was 29th September, also late due to the changeover from Xavier to Gimbir. The average is in the last week of August. So this year's first egg is impossible to predict.

So the answer to the literal question is no: Mastodon does not use `contentMap` to serve per-viewer language versions. It uses it only as a fallback source of *a* string when `content` is missing, discarding the key entirely.

That's a narrower gap than "ignoring contentMap for i18n," though. `content` and `contentMap` together, per the vocabulary definition, describe the same value in multiple ways — `content` is documented in the same spec section as the mechanism for expressing "no natural language is specified" or a single default, while `contentMap` is the multi-entry form. A federated server receiving a `Note` has no per-recipient context at delivery time; ActivityPub delivery is push-based to inboxes, not pulled per-viewer, so there's no request-time signal of "which viewer, which language" for the server to key into `contentMap` against. Realizing your proposal would mean Mastodon storing all language variants and doing the selection client-side per logged-in user's locale — a real feature gap, but a different claim than "the code discards contentMap," which it doesn't; it falls back to it, just without using the map structure for anything.

I’ve said this before and will say it again. If you think social media is so toxic that it damages 16-year-olds then it damages everyone. You don’t magically become immune on your 17th birthday. Either ban it for everyone or not at all.
