The new Third Place is the front seat of your massive SUV, burning $5.00-a-gallon gas to run your air conditioner, doomscrolling on your phone with your foot on the brake clueless that another car is waiting for you to back out so they can have the space to do the same thing
is this packet fragmentation
Need a delicious read this late summer weekend? Automatic Noodle just came out in paperback! Give it a try -- you might like it! I just signed a bunch of copies at Noe Valley Books. 🤓 You can order it there, or at your local indie (Bookshop.org is great too!) https://noevalleybooks.com/book/9781250450982
@annaleen listened to the audio book a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it.
like look https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_encryption_theory#Problem_definition
If some non-absolute level of disk integrity is desired, it can be achieved within the encrypted disk on a file-by-file basis using message authentication codes.
wikipedia is saying yeah if you want to check whether your data is getting fucked up you can add checksums on a per-file basis. even though DATA INTEGRITY IS THE PURPOSE OF THE FILESYSTEM!!!!!
cryptographers will literally tell you to encrypt your disk and add checksums to individual files instead of the other way around
This week, I've been scolded by strangers here for being disrespectful to both staircases and eclipses.
@mattblaze What about stack hazers and ellipses?
i get that it's probably fun for cryptographers to work on but why is it easier to encrypt an entire disk than to encrypt a random file or directory tree

@decryption I was just staring at this in the window of their Lt Bourke St shop (hi @timrichards!) for a minute or two this morning, wondering what I’d do with one.
PieFed 1.7.12 detects AI generated images
OpenAI, Gemini and others have gotten together and agreed on a standard way to embed metadata in images so platforms can tell if an image was made with AI or not. It’s called c2pa.
PieFed now uses c2pa to label image posts as AI, where possible. This will not be 100% reliable because often as images are passed around the embedded metadata gets wiped out but it will help reduce the moderation burden involved with labeling AI images.
Also another change in this release is emoji reactions are more prominent and can be made from the teaser view, without going into the post itself. I hope this leads to more reactions being made and we all get a more interesting a vibrant feed as a result.
@rimu@piefed.social @rimu@mastodon.nzoss.nz c2pa is for a whole lot more than just AI detection, it's full provenance embedded — stream.place uses it iirc for adding all the licensing data to live streams
Hi blog writers: You don’t have to attach a unique image to every blog post, and you *certainly* don’t need to use #AI to generate an image for every blog post. You may think AI-generated images make your posts more attractive, but you are mistaken; they are doing the opposite: they make your posts more *repulsive* to a good number of potential readers. If I see an AI-generated image in the preview, I won’t click through to read your post, I won’t boost the post that mentions your post, and I certainly won’t read the rest of your blog.

We promised you both, so many things. Walking in the park, hiking in the hills. Strolls along the beach. And scritches. Lots and lots of scritches.
Were you so sorry, when we fell short? Visiting dog parks, and sometimes the vet. Patrolling the yard. And car rides. Many, many car rides.
There were good times though, fun surprises. Sleeping on the bed, treats at coffee shops. Rabbits in the yard. And the toys. Lots and lots of squeakers.
But as you're aging, do you miss it? We could've done more, given you more time? Gone on adventures. And scritches. Did you expect much, much more?
But maybe it's true, you needed less. You just wanted love, there at the shelter. Just people who cared. And got them. The promises were for us.

@sen @amiserabilist @maxleibman @tayfonay No way. Humorless people need Comic Sans to feel "whimsy. "
Beige.party doesn't need a font/typeface to evoke the same feelings because the words of the people speak for themselves.
@Alice @amiserabilist @maxleibman @tayfonay no u see we need it for accessibility purposes: https://eyeondesign.aiga.org/sad-but-true-comic-sans-might-just-be-the-best-font-for-dyslexics/

Europe saw at least 30,000 excess deaths across a blistering summer of back-to-back heat waves and drought which scientists have blamed on man-made climate change, according to provisional figures. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2026/08/22/heat-wave-europe-30000-deaths/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #heat #climatechange #europe #eu

@Taweret Never watched Gravity Falls. Now I wanna..
okay fedi I cleaned my keyboard and I can't get the Tab key back on properly. I'm pretty sure that metal bit belongs to it, but I have no idea how it attaches! Anyone got a clue? The disassembly/reassembly videos I've found skip over this particular key.
(The other keys that size snap on to the switch without a metal bit, but this one doesn't, which makes me think either a) it needs the metal bit or b) something broke. The switch seems to work normally, though.)
Model is the ThinkPad USB keyboard with trackpoint, KU-1255.
