For the past month, I've been testing the Logitech Mobi Fold travel mouse. It's an excellent little travel companion with checking out for your on-the-go kit.

@johnvoorhees but can you play StarCraft without needing a cast and painkillers?
I was so sick of replacing batteries on my Hive connected radiator valves, even though I switched to rechargeables, I kept thinking "if only there was a mains-connected adaptor that mimics 2 AA batteries with a flat cable, then at least I wouldn't have to keep changing the batteries on the valves that are close to a plug." Turns out, this DOES exist. I found one called the Aieve battery eliminator (find at a retailer near you – no official web site that I could find) but there are many brands. 🤷♂️
@torgo I always wonder about magical tech like this - so simple to put power through a dummy battery like this but also so cheaply built and they look like they'll fall apart with a hard stare.
Yet also, I've been running my DSLR webcam off a dummy battery with exactly the same plug and connector for 5 years and I've not burnt the house down yet
To me this looks like a reduction of international connector supply due to demand on the continent and French nuclear shutting down due to the heat. Maybe lower wind generation too?
Expect more of this as UK electrifies (and thereby increases demand) and misses (overoptimistic ) 'clean' energy targets.

@markhburton While the neoliberals would suggest building more gigawatt datacenters.

@randahl My goodness! The man's got access to nukes and the whole U.S. Military.
The straitjacket! Congress, you must do something about this inept lunatic, this is becoming way too dangerous.
Donald Dumb is a danger for the whole world. Dementia can become a brutal weapon given the right incentive.
After 1596 days of Russians raping, plundering, torturing, and killing in Ukraine, a Russian woman is in shock that it would have consequences for Russians to keep Vladimir Putin in power.
@randahl man, I had a dreadful flight, I'm back in the USSR

@echo_pbreyer Eben … wer nichts zu verbergen hat, braucht kein Türschloss an seiner Haustür und sollte mit unangekündigten Polizeikontrollen in seiner Wohnung einverstanden sein.🤪
@mpe @nyhan I wrote to the (former) journal editor to ask.
Thinking about old video games, I expect that there is probably a similar danger regarding unclarity about who has the rights when a journal shuts down. I don't think Crossref is likely to just let me tell them where to point it to (I'm only the author of the thing the DOI links to...)
@skyglowberlin @nyhan if the registrant is non-responsive, they might very well -- but it would be in dialogue with them and would have to demonstrate that the prefix owner was not active/responding etc.
(Disclosure: I used to work for Crossref)

I doubt it's a coincidence that the last 10, 15 years things like cryptocurrencies, "metaverse", "AI" are becoming popular, just as "lines" in the computing industry flatten: as the computer has been perfected, an _economy of waste_ is created to sustain appetite for growth.
Computers (phones, tablets &c are computers) have become longer term investments; even if you have abundant money, the latest devices aren't necessarily upgrades that bring anything new to the table. We've _done_ computing, we finished it back in 2010s mostly.
That's a plateau in demand for new devices, or it would be, w/o the saviour of computing wastage industry. Cryptocurrency wastes storage and processors, "AI" wastes memory and processors, "metaverse", ads, cloud etc waste networking bandwidth. So we use much more computing resources than we need.
Computing wastage also inflates the income of fossil fuel industry. Its useless activities and the infrastructure to support all that is powered--where it's not pure speculation and is actually built out--frequently by dirty electricity.
I think that explains a lot about govt & corpo interest esp in "AI" right now. It's a growth driver. It's a line mover upper. It's a conduit of money to an otherwise stagnating tech and dirty energy sector.

@librarysquirrel there's no need for conspiracy here.
It's capitalism where inequality has reached the point where too few people have too much spare capital where maximising growth is all they care about.
So tech that few understand, needs lots of capital and can plausibly (however weakly plausible) offer bigger returns...
[than boring but useful stuff (like feeding and clothing the population, lifting them out of poverty and providing healthcare)]
.. gets the capital. This will break.
@shlee likely inspired, given how many arts students ended up in that restaurant after a heavy night drinking

@lauren JFC what happened now?
@ainali my usual strategy has been to use a hidden GitHub gist to configure it. You can initially create one by exporting the json from fediwall settings, put that on gist, and then load fediwall with the raw json URL tagged on the end. Limit the number of instances and hashtags you target; remove any servers that throw errors / need auth'ed API. Point a URL shortener at your configured URL (fediwall + json url)
@andypiper Thanks! I think you are one step ahead of me, though. What is it that you configure?
I will be giving a keynote at the ACM Hypertext 2026 conference, hopefully in person, though this is dependent on health.
But I love these countdown banners. As though there is an urgency to get tickets to see me (and others) speak. Ha!

@randahl Wtf what was that response supposed to mean? It sounds like he is crawling up even deeper Trumps ass after such a question.
