We put the ducklings (who are almost fully feathered now and occasionally quacking) into the greenhouse and they are SO much happier! I should have done this earlier but didn't think of it. (Chickens can't be in the greenhouse because they will jump up and eat seedlings. But domestic ducks can't jump or fly, so perfect!)

The reason this cannot by applied to activitypub/mastodon is because bluesky has the whole identity and storage server concept built in, and let’s be honest that is a degree of centralisation you can only be comfortable with if you don’t think your opinions might align with such fringe radicals like… UN and ICC officials?

Guter Text. Ich persönlich glaube schon das KI bleiben wird, in Bereichen wie Coding, Texte, Mustererkennung usw. kann KI wirklich produktiver machen und ist ein gutes Werkzeug.
Aber da wird viel zu viel versprochen und viel zu viel Geld gedreht.

The English language needs a word for the rage I feel when the company that makes the pants I like discontinues them.
I just sent my first grant request to help fund my open source work, mainly to replace my old Mac. It crashes during builds, forcing me to kill apps and delete files to free up space, then wipe everything and reinstall emulators when switching between Android and iOS. For now I've focused on Android, but it defeats the whole point of buying a Mac. A new machine would let me work on both.

I'm watching our dept trying to dismantle and divest from our very functional cluster with 256GB nodes. They haven't seen a single cloud bill yet because the vendor is giving them a free trial period.
I absolutely cannot wait.
The major impetus seems to be that they think this is a clever way to abandon 6PB of old research data

Considering the current market, the 90s might indeed be calling. Unless a department is willing to pay for high mem nodes or suffers from the illusion that cloud providers are a charity.
512G standard nodes, however, do not seem like a necessity. Not even for genomics works. There are use cases for 1T+ nodes, but bread and butter tasks, surely for I/O intensive tasks too, does not require that much.

I am currently reading through a collection of German folk tales from the #Alsace , in the French-German border regions.
And the regional differences are quite fascinating - there are numerous tales that mention "Feen", the German term for "fairies", while that term is almost completely absent in other German-speaking regions.
This only confirms my conviction that it would be inappropriate to call the many spirits in German folk tales as "fairies", since that evokes associations that aren't really appropriate for most German-speaking regions.
