@mcc this is really why i hate the assumption that seems prevalent in software that everything will always be connected to the internet
Scientists analyzed over 900 marriages within the ’Ndrangheta, one of the most infamous mafia syndicates, to understand how “matrimonial ties relate to power and cohesion within the organization.”

More or less - if the polling wasn't what it was, if they didn't think the local elections were a harbinger of a national contest, Starmer would probably ALREADY be out. And if you're going to use him as a human shield to get your ducks in a row long enough to install Andy Burnham - it doesn't really do you a lot of good to undercut your own Prime Minister in the meantime.
But I am being told the decision has been made. It's a done deal. There is no bridge back for Keir now.
Whether or not that means an actual CHANGE in Labour Party politics and policies? I am skeptical. Sounds to me like the guys who decided Corbyn had to go and Starmer was the light, are still in charge, and much more concerned about keeping Angela Rayner out of the PM's office than you know - beating the right.
Extremely cursed.
What I've heard, is that Rainer remains obscenely unpopular with her peers serving IN the Party, so they are going to unite around the landless Prince of Manchester. The fact that he doesn't have a seat right now, is a problem.
@AnarchoNinaWrites I'm not convinced he'll get enough support, he's far too left for a lot of the party, despite being strongly in favour of the nuclear family and dropping proposals for more taxes when he went for the leadership 10 years ago.
@knotnicky Queen of the perch!
@Edent how does she do it
Oh I can do happy #caturday now! Meet Roxy, our new overlord. She is a domestic longhair, 3.5 years old, from a “multi cat household”, was taken to the RSPCA in September, heavily pregnant, had her kittens in foster in October, and was back in the shelter in December. Happily she didn’t have to wait too long for us to pick her up in January. I am smitten ❤️
@knotnicky good balance too!
I enjoyed this paper by @UlrikeHahn! It's very well written, and I think it's correctly identifying and dissecting an important stumbling block in our discussions of what LLMs are capable of. I really appreciate the attempt to make this dialog more productive
The point is that "reasoning" is a hopelessly ambiguous term, with many different meanings within and across fields. If we want to debate whether LLMs can "reason," then we ought to get much more precise about what we mean.
I strongly agree with most of this, though I do have a few objections. They're all from section 5.4, exploring arguments about "the means" by which LLMs complete reasoning tasks, or whether they lack the means to do what we call "reasoning."
This really is the value of a paper like this: because of Ulrike's careful analysis, I can point to precisely the point where I think the problem lies. Interestingly, "reasoning" may be a red herring.
@ngaylinn thank you for the kind words, Nate!

A little project I’ve been working on. Still working on adding more entries, but it’s got a lot of odd stuff already: https://shopping.tedium.co
@ernie Very pleased to see the toilet lights in there. We have used them for several years, and they are life-changing (moreso for those of us who often pee standing up in the dark).
@sanguine Sure, if @NanoRaptor 's okay with it!
@welshpixie @sanguine absolutely! Free for all to use however needed.
A recent CoinDesk survey found 73% disapprove of government officials having crypto business ties, yet 55% weren’t aware of Trump’s involvement, and only 17% knew he co-founded World Liberty Financial.
This underscores why my work at Citation Needed is so necessary.
pre-coffee thoughts with Tilly:
when I don’t want to see something i just close my eyes and i really wish when I didn’t want to hear yet another cis guy telling me what he thinks of my appearance that I could just close my ears
this has been pre-coffee thoughts with Tilly
@tillybridges wow, those are deep pre-coffee thoughts! 💗
God save us from Douthat pontificating on AI and theology: "[T]here’s a future where artificial intelligence mostly increases metaphysical uncertainty, leaving a lot of people simply unsettled about fundamental questions, increasingly 'mysterian' rather than clearly atheistic or devout."

@jeffjarvis The Bible suggests otherwise. At least, it suggests humans do not believe in a God who would forgive this level of hubris. On the other hand, the episode of Abraham bargaining for Sodom in Genesis 18 shows that, ultimately, we hope for forgiveness. (And the message of Christ goes even further.)
Could that maybe be a use case for @inventaire + #flohmarkt @grindhold, eventually including some kind of integration where selected Inventaire items can be offered for swapping in an interoperable way?
Other offer-request networks may integrate in a way that they can understand which kind of exchange modality is expected other than buying, like lending, the said swapping or gifting.

Akik Magyar Péter beszédén dolgoztak, le a kalapom előttük. Ez biza ütős lett. Furcsa érzés icike picikét bizakodni.
Kritikus voltam, szkeptikus, de eddig elég jól eltalálják a kellő hangokat. Remélem ezen az úton rajta is maradnak.
Those who worked on Péter Magyar's speech: hats off to you, it was really impressive. It's a strange feeling to have a tiny speck of hope again.
I was critical, and sceptical, but so far, they're hitting the right notes. Here's hoping they will continue on that track.
