Many companies are looking at different ways to do this (like the stare-into-the-IR-beam company above). All of them have huge safety, tech, and/or feasibility issues.
@sundogplanets there is also the distinct possibility (state fascism, "space force", department of war, etc etc) that any tech able to concentrate large amounts of sunlight and aim it at the ground would of course be used as a weapon.
And of course even when not used as a weapon, it wouldnt be a public, tax funded service, it would put a chain and a price tag on *sunlight* and solar. This isnt the solar we all need.

Our Scanning Electron Microscope instrument provider, Zeiss, "upgraded" the controlling computer to Windows 11. Took over a day to do, since the new OS wasn't exactly cooperative. And on day two, over 50 reboots later and the system isn't stable yet.
Why scientific instrument companies use Microsoft Windows for their products is beyond me, when they could freeze e.g., a linux distribution with 10-year support for peanuts and still sell it to us for outrageous fees, and reduce their service costs dramatically.
