Anyone out there get the latest windows update and suddenly can't connect to wi-fi, and subsequently are in hell trying to fix it for several hours?
Discussion
@ZachWeinersmith possibly helpful: most Android phones support USB tethering and can supply the computer with whichever wifi connection it's connected to. I've sometimes relied on that after borking a network driver, to make it usable long enough to fix.
@CharlesMicah Yeah, I managed to tether my iphone and am seeing about getting drivers...
@ZachWeinersmith Nope, but I did have a lot of problems with specific WiFi chipsets in the past. Any idea what WiFi card you have?
@jernej__s Well the weird thing is I have a card AND a portable antenna, and neither work! I'm wondering if something got ultra-borked during the latest update
@ZachWeinersmith I'd have definitely heard from clients if there were any widespread problems.
What are the exact symptoms you have?
(and I'm assuming that by "portable antenna" you mean a USB WiFi adapter)
@jernej__s Just that it doesn't detect any wifi networks, no water what I do. Trying to get a new driver for my tp link while tethered to my iPhone.
Our Scanning Electron Microscope instrument provider, Zeiss, "upgraded" the controlling computer to Windows 11. Took over a day to do, since the new OS wasn't exactly cooperative. And on day two, over 50 reboots later and the system isn't stable yet.
Why scientific instrument companies use Microsoft Windows for their products is beyond me, when they could freeze e.g., a linux distribution with 10-year support for peanuts and still sell it to us for outrageous fees, and reduce their service costs dramatically.
@ZachWeinersmith no, but now I’m penciling that into my S&M- er, MS schedule.
