This is one of my favorite comics we've made. Cats will be cats.
So much talk about data, but no funder wants to support databases.
FlyBase is in trouble, yet a key reference in biology research.
Raising funds to support curating connectome datasets, including their large, nanometer-resolution volumes, is hard. Yet then evaluators point out that we aren't doing enough to make it easy to access – yet with what funds?
And likewise for every scientific dataset ... either there is an internally funded institute behind it (and even then) or it is hell.
Everyone wants new data, but nobody seems to pay attention to the need for old data to support the generation and interpretation of new data!
This is a problem that people have been warning abut for almost 15 years now, see e.g.:
https://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/limited-access-is-a-symptom-not-the-disease/14465622
Slide 13-17 from 2012.
How can it be that so often in science, most people understand and agree that there is a massive problem and yet, nothing happens.
When the Flybase shit hit the fan, I contacted them and asked them for their plans for decentralization - they had none, they said.
Or THIS shit which is really shit: https://harvardtechnologyreview.com/2025/09/05/the-future-of-energy-unlocking-the-potential-of-space-based-solar-power/
Many companies are looking at different ways to do this (like the stare-into-the-IR-beam company above). All of them have huge safety, tech, and/or feasibility issues.
But of course nothing beats SpaceX's drunk teenager scifi novel of an FCC filing about how we need AI data centres in orbit to ascend into Kardashev civilization land. Which the FCC took totally seriously, opened for public comment in 4 days (record-short time!) https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-26-113A1.pdf
and the FCC will probably approve despite a couple thousand comments from the public and at least two petitions to deny opposing it. Fuckers.
@JessMahler It lets me see that there are other paths to good stories. I wonder if this is more of a heroine's journey.
@LJ
I wouldn't consider it such. Or rather, i'd say that a heroine's journey may be one kind of growth-centered story, but growth-centered stories are a bigger category than just that.
(There are several versions of a 'heronine's journey' floating around already, and I'm honestly not a fan of any of them.)
If you are interested in other paths to stories, you might like Kim Yoonmi's collection of World Wide Story Structures. Just be warned -- it's very long:

Is there a name for having a browser tab open with an article you have not read yet but you know it's super gonna piss you off and you kinda wanna comment on it but also you kinda don't want to take the mental damage?

And for those who can reach it - here is the #DENIC status page: https://status.denic.de/
We are monitoring a #DNSSEC-related issue with #DE ccTLD. The issue is not specific to Quad9. We will update once more information becomes available.

Last year Microsoft announced plans to bring Copilot to Xbox, offering AI-assisted gaming advice by observing & reacting as you play. Now Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced MS is scrapping Copilot for Xbox. #AI #Microsoft #Xbox #Copilot https://www.engadget.com/2165562/xbox-is-ditching-microsofts-copilot-ai/
Because it is DNS, everything is cached on multiple levels. Because there are nameservers in different TLDs (which is the correct thing to do!), combined with cache invalidation fun, this will keep looking like intermittent failures for a while most probably.
Or this shit: https://spacedaily.com/sd-n-nasa-backs-interlunes-2028-bid-to-mine-helium-3-from-the-moon/
The Moon's gravity is much weaker than Earth's so it'll be easy to accidentally launch rocks into Moon-escape orbits, making the Earth-Moon trip even more hazardous than it is already. Fun!
Checking; that grant is for a system to measure volatile gases in lunar regolith in situ.
Nothing about mining the Moon for helium-3.
The media coverage remains appalling.

A quick update on the fundraiser. Honestly, I felt almost ashamed to ask for this kind of help, because my own project was depending on support while starting to create frustration in my daily dev because of the machine. The response confirms it: Holos and my iOS projects aren't mature enough yet to have built that trust. So I'm dropping iOS for now and focusing on Android. The campaign is closed and contributors have been refunded.
@apps
I was surprised to got the email that it was refunded to me.
I personally don't care about iOS, but I know the pain when the dev machine is lagging and takes forever for every task and you don't deserve that pain. I would still be happy to contribute to help with that.
