The more I pay attention, the more I see growth stories. Especially among indie writers who don't have agents and editors expecting us to tow the line of 'what works.'

I wouldn't consider it such. Or rather, i'd say that a heroine's journey may be one kind of growth-centered story, but growth-centered stories are a bigger category than just that.
(There are several versions of a 'heronine's journey' floating around already, and I'm honestly not a fan of any of them.)
