@GhostOnTheHalfShell @dlakelan A common numerical unit of account -- you can even call it a dollar -- doesn't require any circulating currency. Just that everyone have a running account in a common institution. Your balance goes up and Bob's goes down from the apple exchange, yours goes down and Alice's goes up from the apples, and you pay for the hotdogs with the same account.
