@RosaCtrl oh that's true. i certainly don't care about being lauded for it. but i do have a predilection for doing things that haven't been done and i think that can be unhealthy
@hipsterelectron oh, why is that? Are you afraid of running out of novel ideas or something?
thats harm reduction baby. it's sometimes messy and uncomfortable. when people bring up narcan and safe injection sites people arent like "wowww they support heroin users :/" "they literally think everyone should do heroin"

My company used to be a scrappy San Francisco tech startup but we were acquired by a large corporation so we had to switch from being Google people to Microsoft people and I'm in the process of creating a training deck in PowerPoint and I am seriously losing my mind with how Microsoft keeps messing up my formatting and how every little thing seems to take 5–10 times as many steps.
For example, I'll try to figure out how to do something that would have taken one click in Google slides and I'll figure it out, but it's like a seventeen step process in PowerPoint, so, when I’m done, I'll ask my husband who has been tortured by Microsoft for much longer if there's an easier way to do that thing and he'll inevitably be like "the way you did it IS the easy way to do it in PowerPoint/Word/whatever."
It's seriously like they clunked together some code and were like "well, it's at least kind of sort of better than a word processor?" and never bothered to improve anything.
@Alice Someone recently told me, bad UX would be the primary reason why Linux would not be more widely spread... Microsoft being the defacto standard in business despite having most of the time far worse UX, shows that the spread of a software doesn't have to do much with UX.
a while ago patricia taxxon made some _harm-reductionist_ post about how, if you're going to be under-18 and sneaking into the nsfw chats online, you should probably lie about your age, because if you don't, you're going to catch the attention of creeps specifically interested in you because you're under-18. this seems entirely reasonable to me

@phillycodehound fortunately it was left on the kitchen table instead of the room 🫠
The bad news is that the kid found it herself. My wife played it off real cool and was like "looks like the tooth fairy dropped it, I'll take it to work and mail it to her!" (since I work from home with my daughter before school)
@McNeely ROTFL! Well played to your wife!
@mcdowellsmith it's a high energy show tobys

Caught @sundogplanets lecture this evening (after missing it on Wednesday). Highly recommended! Kinda breaks my heart that Im taking some of the last relatively clean images of the night sky, and even more sad that we're really only one incident away from losing orbit to space debris for as long as it takes the resulting space flotsam to re-enter (trashing the atmosphere on its way). That weirdo Musk is stealing the night sky, catch it while it's still there!
@McNeely Oh No!!!!! How'd it go? HAHA What was your excuse for the TF leaving the tooth? HAHA

@zardoz03 i really think quoting should be fully client side. pachli does a pretty good job of rendering links almost like quotes. but it really should be a matter of displaying the source post without any server-side interaction
New blog day! Today we're looking at uses of Lagrange Points in science and SF, featuring Forward, Baxter, Clarke, Space: Above and Beyond and many others... including a nod to Bill Higgins and a very recent story by Sean McMullen.
Comments always welcome.

@TheBreadmonkey You know, I never understood all these elaborate Favourites. It's the simplest thing to cause more pain than a man can possibly endure. And of course, it's not only the immediate agony, but the knowledge that if you do not Boost soon enough, there will be little left to identify you as a man. The only question remains: will you Boost, in time?
Gigantesco... Nient'altro da dire!
@hipsterelectron the system of quote posts being something more than just a normal link is definitely an example of that, since akkoma/misskey or wtv already did that without its consent model or whatever they added that was subtly different and not what was extant
