To the excited reply guys in my replies:

  • No, I'm not claiming that Mojeek doesn't use AI anywhere, I'm simply stating that when I search a term, the result page displays no AI answer to me by default, and it seems the AI-slop results are greatly deprioritized ("no AI pollution" in my results), compared to what I get on DuckDuckGo and Start Page (and would also get with Google and Bing, but I don't use these directly).

  • This is only a post about my own personal experience, it isn't a full review of the engine, obviously.

  • If you dig into the settings and find an AI feature you could enable and don't like that, you are free to not use it, and you really don't have to tell me about it (please don't).

  • If you want to research and write a full review of search engines, please do! And please do it outside of my replies, without tagging me.

  • For anyone who knows me, yes I dislike AI features a lot, and I don't enable any of them anywhere. I seem to be able to use Mojeek getting genuine informative results free from the AI plague, and I wanted to share this joy with you. Whenever AI is put in my face against my will (like with many other search engines and countless software do) doesn't mean I'm using it. I don't use AI, ever. But yes, it's everywhere around me, to my greatest sorrow.

@Em0nM4stodon 👍 superb, yeah I've changed my default to @Mojeek on my machines and most of the time it's just fine. Occasionally I think, hmm no that's not enough and I'll fall back to Google but I imagine that's going to happen less and less.

It's poor SF conditioned by a focus on energy.
Unless People are txing at us from less than maybe 5 ly, only spectroscopic analysis of planet transiting a star is likely to reveal much. A more advanced society might use less energy!

@raymaccarthy @isotopp Kardashev's work was published in 1964, a time when our understanding of technological development *was* energy bounded rather than infomation bounded. A huge amount changed after roughly 1973-74!

@rmondello

Apparently the services that do this on your behalf (including Apple I imagine) are too effective.

So at least with a captcha, they can tell you aren’t a bot, the address IS hot, and your email address can be resold.

I’ve never thought unsubscribing to unsolicited commercial email worked other than to replace the hydras head with 2 new different ones.

I don’t see how those selling an unsubscribe service squelch the tide more. Black list the spamming email on your local filters?

@gooba42 Well I just don't accept that analogy. A higher-level programming language would be another formal rules-based *programming language*, not fuzzy English prompts which trigger an Internet-sized training dataset to remix other people's appropriated code into a new configuration of code snippets.

@gooba42@mastodon.social replied  ·  activity timestamp 2 minutes ago

@jaredwhite Getting decent results from it is, despite the marketing, largely about formally constructed language.

It's closer to natural language but it's far more likely to totally fly off the rails if you're not being careful and structured.

@rahoulb Citation very much needed on "more reliable" 😄

But yeah, you raise a good question with regard to ownership. Models don't simply exist as singular artifacts…they are based *on* something. Whose work are they based on? Whose work is being appropriated when they are used?

@jaredwhite Not totally reliable today - but the pace of improvement is so high I think they will be in a year.

They write better tests, with more edge case coverage than I do, they write more complete end-to-end tests too (whereas I get bored). They have pointed out areas where I did inappropriate authorisation checks. They have found security issues with my CI and Ansible playbooks.

They don't stop beginner mistakes by vibe coders. But they make me much better than I would be alone.

I've been allowed a bit of artistic licence with youngests birthday cake (although under instruction not to go OTT with decoration), so have opted for a cheeky Valencian orange cake with candied peel. Which I think sounds terrific, but we'll see how it comes out!

Edit - forgot I'd posted some of the cakes I made here before (thread):

If you see someone questioning racism in the fediverse, have them read https://privacy.thenexus.today/start-making-the-fediverse-less-toxic/.

Some people might think they're "actually helping" by inundating strangers with unwanted opinions and suggestions.

Have them try https://static.stefanbohacek.com/mansplaining/.

5 things white people can do to start making the fediverse less toxic for Black people

Anti-Blackness is a long-term problem in the fediverse. Now's a good time to start changing that.

Quick question. When someone tries to shame you into obedience, does that ever work on you?

You might think that bullying individuals into doing things "the right way" works, but it doesn't, not always. Remember to lead by example!
