Today is David Graeber's birthday. He'd have been 65 years old today.
His ideas are still here and his message is more important than ever before which must remind us that a better world is possible.
Reminder that I am giving a talk on the battle between IBM and Compaq for the soul of the PC!
It's next week at the Computer Conservation Society. Tickets available for both in-person and online. #history #compaq #technology

I think the thing that makes me saddest about this whole “use an LLM to generate code” thing is that many of my heroes are no longer my heroes.
@ermo @8r3n7 well, wake me up when any US billionaire pays their fair share of taxes. If you know to make this happen here in the USA, please do share with all of us how this can be made to happen with step-by-step specifics, please? I mean, I completely agree we COULD COMPLETELY ELIMATE US POVERTY IN A SINGLE DAY (at the 100% FPL level) if the billionaires paid their fair share of taxes. I wonder why that isn't happening? Seems easy, right?
@codinghorror I just want to point out that I think your choice of "putting your money where your mouth" is re. UBI is commendable.
I hope it makes a big difference in terms of becoming an indisputable data point.
Best thing I've read on the Internet in AGES:

This might be even better than The Great Flamingo Uprising of 2010.

Went to a family friend's funeral today, at the church my dear mother insisted on slipping a £10 note in my top pocket for the church collection. Couldn't do it, and put it in the hospice box at the local shop instead. The Church doesn't need any more money.
@idzie I love them 💚 It's true, they are so small and easily missed. Their song is beautiful and how proud they are to share it. I try be near them when I hear it! Spring is showing signs here on the west coast. Thank you, I hope you see and hear a Song Sparrow soon! :)
(here's a shaky clip of Song Sparrow's song)
@miyotehew thanks for sharing!! Their song is such a near-constant for all the warm months here, it's so nice. I took this video last fall, with the keen awareness that it would likely be one of the last times I heard their song for many months (I was right). https://kolektiva.social/system/media_attachments/files/115/458/747/157/652/407/original/7c3144e27a4f84da.mp4
Wait, the shirtless super bowl guy is the same guy plastered all over automotive YouTube who's in trouble with Bugatti for trying to rebuild the one he wrecked?
That investment platform must not be doing so hot to be this desperate for engagement lol
this post is typed live to bits then broadcasted to you.
It’s so unsettling watching our 250 year-old democracy decay into dictatorship while the most disruptive technology since steam power is evolving at superhuman speed. It’s like watching a locomotive barrel headlong into a tornado. I have a bad feeling about this.
@leo I never would have imagined that for America’s 250th birthday, that I’d be watching a President working so hard to actively destroy our nation.
Like what did my grandfather fight for in WW2 just for this shit to happen all these years later, and for those with the power to stop him to just sit there either silent or cheering him on?

"Rather than aiming for ‘perfect,’ the project is about raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and making small, practical changes feel possible (and enjoyable!).
We also donated the funds, a total of £140, from our first event to Notts Trans Hub to spread the kindness.”
We can also see kindness to the environment in this story, and we just love story with so many aspects to it.
What community projects have you spotted kindness at?

Aperiodic reminder that #commonlisp is awesome!
"And all the love that the project received before it's first event even happened was so kind.
People shared it with their friends, helping boost the posts on social media, telling me how important what I’m doing is and how awesome it is to cheer me on. It was all so kind and supportive.
The idea behind Re-Kinked is pretty simple: a lot of kink gear doesn’t need to be brand new, and a lot of conversations around sustainability are missing from the kink scene."

Supporting community run projects is such a powerful act of kindness that ripples out. In fact, community projects are somewhere we hear about a lot of kindness from the people organising them, to those getting the word out about them, along with the specifics of the project itself, and here’s one example:
“I started a the Re-Kinked project, a Midlands-based, community-focused project exploring how kink and sustainability can go hand in hand."
