I should specify that I mean "moderated registration" not "invite-only" or "no signups" when I've been saying closed registration here.
[edit for correctness] and in parallel you said:
I say this from experience. I remember how online forums tried to handle spam, bots, and trolls — by making registration harder. Some required manual review or moderator approval. That worked for a while, but it also made those communities less welcoming and more difficult to join. Over time, most forums faded away.
and, Netscape, I think you're not really doing the math well here. Alice has pointed out it takes them on average less than a minute to vet a new account application. It takes longer to write - but if a user can't be bothered to write a paragraph about themselves asking to join a server, are they really going to contribute to discussions? It is not gatekeeping. It is not onerous to have applications take a day to approve.
More importantly, it is not "less welcoming" to have a policy of no bad actors. It is more welcoming.
The sign up friction is not a concern in this way, and in fact is likely positive as there are studies showing that paying even a nominal amount of money or energy for a thing makes a person value that thing much more, which implies much greater stickiness, if growth of actual community members is your goal.
(Growth of new signups who never post should not be your goal.)
So.

... then they're not going to fill out their profile, which means they will struggle to find anyone to follow or even interact with them. So here's a #UX suggestion; somehow combine the 2.
Ask them what their profile text would say if they're accepted, and have accepting the account autopopulate the profile with that text.
@villares yes! i am criticizing the coverage.py maintainer for using such strange language without following up on any of the points i mentioned which make their support so notable
@villares i also think it's just a weird kind of faux pas to not mention that someone is expressly supporting your project specifically and instead deferring to "open source"
Concealed carry
I can’t remember where I saw it, but I feel like today is a good time to revisit the concept of “Vegan + bacon”.
People often avoid making small positive changes because they get caught up in trying to go all the way. For example, “I could never go vegan. I love bacon too much”.
So then go vegan plus bacon. Or vegetarian plus bacon. Or just switch to oat milk and eat more vegetables. Whatever small change you can make is good
@danirabbit Elsewhere, a guy was arguing the difference between plant-based vs vegetarian/vegan. You cannot be the latter unless you’re fighting for animal rights!
People love to put their own labels on others. Having a couple of vegetarian meals a week can make an impact on health and environment.

Currently have two deliveries, one with USPS and it’s currently in Pennsylvania and one with UPS which is in New Jersey.
Both claim delivery is today in Arizona. 🥴

Surprising no one, nothing was delivered though they still claim they'll deliver today. 😂
JOB OFFER
We are looking for a new office cat.
We are looking for: Cute, must purr a lot, soft fur, 5-10 years experience in RUST.
We are offering: No payment, food always 10 minutes to late, a soft place near a window or a radiator.
Your task will include throwing things down the table, looking cute, curl up in the one colleagues lap who is highly allergic to cat hairs and Programm something in RUST. We don't need any software in Rust, but we want to add the tagline "Blazingly fast" to our headlines.
Please provide a complete CV and point out past experiences you gained.
@flancian Something that I'd like to note about this pole for the people who have already voted is that the pole is almost equally split between people who think 'maybe Stalin had a point' and people who think 'churchill was right'. Why is the middle ground so empty? I think it deserves a discussion.
An existing indictment (even under seal) would generally stop the statue of limitations clock.
But what we also don't know, if this speculation is correct, is why they wouldn't have immediately arrested the target here (presumably a public official) once that indictment had been issued. There are a few possibilities (e.g. someone is cooperating against other defendants), but without more information, we can't do anything more than speculate.
I've been thinking out loud here, but the more I do so, the more I think the best explanation (among unlikely explanations) is that there's an existing sealed indictment of some group of Georgia or Fulton County election officials, dated October 12, 2025.
@lauren Chrome Auto browse is great. It's my favorite thing after scarlet fever.
@hipsterelectron well QuantSight supports the scientific Python ecosystem massively, funding work on NumPy & many other libraries.

Another fantastic video from @TechConnectify on the absolute inevitability and board benefits of renewable energy.
And it ends with a bang: "Folks, you need to wake up and smell the fashism."
"Non possiamo limitarci a stare a guardare e permettere che questo continui", ha affermato un presidente sindacale. "Dobbiamo usare tutti gli strumenti a nostra disposizione per reagire".
Anyone have a “smart lights” flow they really like? Currently have Hue and don’t love the lag/occasional bugs/weird switches so probably moving to Lutron, but I *do* love how Hue changes color temperature over the course of the day. Anyone pair both smart bulbs and switch?
@christianselig I have Shelly 1’s in all my light sockets, hue lights connected to Home Assistant via the a Zha zigbee bridge. Works great and my entire apartment does color temp change throughout the day but we use normal light switches.
