@vruz I still don't see a few hundred million changing their usage patterns for a few decades though - whilst the shift to electric vehicles is definitely happening, its still fairly limited in overall terms and currently only is a few data points.

There are other things fossil fuels get used for such as making plastics, and if anything the consumption of those has increased over the decades..

I want the #Fediverse to grow. But out of curiosity, how well would the Fediverse scale? What would happen if the current user base increased by a factor of 10, 100, or 1000?

And if the answer is "bad things", what would need to be done to make the Fediverse cope with such an expanded user base?

(For the purpose of this thought exercise, assume that each specific Fediverse software implementation would likewise multiply their user base by this factor, albeit spread out over more instances.)

So far I've been studying Papyrix's code for booting up its hardware & filesystems, as well as text-rendering when it has to report errors. I was very keen to study that text-rendering!

Next it initializes one of 2 UI modes, today I'll study how it chooses which to boot.

1st it checks if the "pending transition" in the saved settings is 1, handling that specially.

P.S. The code has evolved since I started my study, so I'm now studying it roughly as it was when I began.

If that pending transition is 1 Papryix logs some data, updates a cached transition to match, & zeroes out (via a helper) the transition settings, & indicates it should boot into UI mode.

Otherwise if it was 2 & it remembers which book you're reading (validating it still exists), Papyrix some similar logic but instead chooses Reader mode. Or it might do essentially the same if configured to & if it remembers you had a valid book open.

Otherwise it boots into UI mode.
