I don’t want a new phone. I want my perfectly good hardware to keep getting updates until it actually stops working. I want replaceable batteries that get recycled. If a company stops giving updates I want to be able to change the OS.

I strongly share these vibes. My career has been a combination of getting to be good at running infrastructure in data centers so that people could use and share data more easily, while simultaneously pursuing an academic track of trying to learn how to analyze geographic and environmental data with nuance and care.
I felt very good about doing that for a long time.
But now it seems like to work in anything like what I've done before, you have to at the very least get close to generative AI, the very premises of which feel like taking everything I've painstakingly learned about data for 25 years and throwing it out the window and saying, "NEVER MIND LET'S JUST WING IT!"
I hate it. I absolutely deeply despise it so much. But I'm over 50 now and I have a mortgage and I'm really not sure what I'm supposed to be doing.

I'm long time retired from a career involving a lot of computer science.
My son is currently involved in a computer science career.
We are both disillusioned by what's happening to the field. I told my son that if I were young now, computer science isn't the field I'd choose. He agrees, and fortunately also has an MBA that he can use to move to a different type of career.

I don't get this whole "your upstream is using AI, and so should you! just give in!" thing is coming from. This isn't a race to the bottom, people.
Some downstreams just accept the inevitable: someone somewhere upstream will do something at any some arbitrary time to do something unwise.
Decisions made upstream are not immediately inherited downstream (guess why the downstream exists already.)
Downstreams often make different decisions than their upstreams. And that's totally fine!
As the maintainer of multiple open source projects with upstreams: I cannot force my will on others. I myself won't use AI/LLM in this context. I will reject patches whose authors admit to using AIs/LLMs in the development of the patch. (I recognize that's based on "the honor code"--again, I cannot force people; I can only lead by example.)
I will primarily reject AI/LLM generated patches because I do not have the resources to pay a lawyer. As the maintainer downstream, there is legal risk in accepting (knowingly) generated code due to the large potential for copyright infringement or other intellectual property/licensing rights.
In one project, I have strictly maintained separation from another codebase in order to perform a clean-room reimplementation. After having spent more than a decade strictly trying to avoid license taint, why would I want to risk it now?
I think you'll find a lot of wisdom in those people who remain steady while others get easily beset by the wind.
(Please know that I'm human, I make mistakes. It's possible I misphrased something here, and if so, I apologize. I did note that I am an idiot, and these are simply musings.)

@cameronbanga Interesting theory, but that would be a strange choice from Apple. AFAIK it hasn't done that with any of their other Qi/MagSafe compatible phones.
Another theory: IIRC they didn't mention it for the 18 Pro either. Maybe Apple considers MagSafe just standard now; not requiring a mention.
@chartier I guess by adding to 17e this spring, all phones have it. That was last hold out, right?
