I strongly share these vibes. My career has been a combination of getting to be good at running infrastructure in data centers so that people could use and share data more easily, while simultaneously pursuing an academic track of trying to learn how to analyze geographic and environmental data with nuance and care.

I felt very good about doing that for a long time.

But now it seems like to work in anything like what I've done before, you have to at the very least get close to generative AI, the very premises of which feel like taking everything I've painstakingly learned about data for 25 years and throwing it out the window and saying, "NEVER MIND LET'S JUST WING IT!"

I hate it. I absolutely deeply despise it so much. But I'm over 50 now and I have a mortgage and I'm really not sure what I'm supposed to be doing.

I'm long time retired from a career involving a lot of computer science.
My son is currently involved in a computer science career.

We are both disillusioned by what's happening to the field. I told my son that if I were young now, computer science isn't the field I'd choose. He agrees, and fortunately also has an MBA that he can use to move to a different type of career.

@MichaelTBacon Famous last words, but most of the funded PhDs I can find in my areas want to shove AI in there and I do not want to be part of it.

I try to get my baseline costs down as much as possible, because that gives me more freedom to *not* be an accomplice to this stuff.

It is hard, but I think what helps and what I don't have as much access to is finding colleagues to resist together. People are stronger saying "no" in a group than alone. The larger the group, the better.
