We’ve reached the point where the linting spellcheck system on my phone is just… wrong. A substantial portion of the time. It flags correctly spelled words, it often suggests misspellings.

PSA to folks born this millennium: in my lifetime, there was a time when spellcheck for english language text was *excellent.* Grammar check was getting pretty decent. The code existed and was polished and *available constantly for everyday users*.

That is gone, now. We lost that tech *in your lifetime.*

@tfardet I think it definitely has something to do with phase change cooling.

The amount of water I had in the pan was very thin in this case though (I wasn't paying attention and it nearly evaporated dry!), so I don't think there is any convective movement for cool water to go to the bottom.

My guess would be that temperature gradients on the frypan probably play a role. Maybe as the pan cools as the water boils off, but the heat from the hot section rushes in to the cool areas, and that causes an oscillation

1/ #SpringerNature just published a report showing certain download and citation benefits of "gold" #OpenAccess. (I'm linking to the executive summary.)

But it's very misleading, even dishonest, in one respect. It shows that #GoldOA articles are downloaded and cited more than non-OA articles. But it attributes this to the fact that they are gold OA (charging #APCs), not to the fact that they are OA. Because it didn't test no-APC or #DiamondOA journals, attributing the download and citation benefits to the APC business model is unjustified and deceptive.

It also says that the gold OA model supports "greater equity" because it allows more downloads than non-OA models in low-income countries. But that kind of equity belongs to all flavors of OA. The report never mentions that APCs severely reduce equity by excluding authors who cannot afford to pay.

@sharpcheddargoblin It's not a given, but yes, the risk is quite high. Tech is generally not political, and there are open models that can do things like code analyzing with "somewhat ok" resource use. But I sadly do not think that is what GrapheneOS is talking about.

To compare with git, using git for your project does not need to mean you support bad people, but the moment you pay money to github, you do.

And it does not really matter if AI is used to produce code or not, what matters in this setting is the cost, and who gets the money.

The cost of this must be taken from donations.

The best bet is that this money ends up with Microsoft, with Anthropic and OpenAI as "close contenders".

Graphene could be open about this. What LLMs are used? What is the cost and who gets our donations?

Already, it is sad to see GrapheneOS be on Github, especially if it involves any financial cost, but I understand it is hard to leave.

But to pay for their LLMs is highly unethical.
