Japanese secondhand goods retailer Bookoff, which disposes of 1,700 tons of unsold CDs, DVDs and their cases from some 800 outlets across the country each year, plans to step up its recycling of such discs. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2025/07/08/companies/japan-bookoff-secondhand-store-plastic-recycling/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #companies #bookoff #recycling #plastic

'They demonstrated that old smartphones can be successfully repurposed into tiny data centers capable of efficiently processing and storing data. ...

These tiny data centers have a wide range of applications. For example, they could be used in urban environments like bus stops to collect real-time data on the number of passengers, which could then be used to optimize public transportation networks.'

People doing resource recovery, whether as public services or businesses, are doing such an important job. We need to support them in every way we can, so they can get more unwanted stuff to people who can make use of it.

@jetlagjen
> plastic is recyclable

... in a general sense. Some types can be collected, rendered down, and made into things. The question is whether it's worth all the energy and resources required to wash, collect and process it, when new plastic is so cheap to make.

Dump mining is similar. Possible in theory, but costly.

> heat pumps don't work

Well that one's like saying fridges don't work. They're just the same thing in reverse.

@ambientspace

@strypey @jetlagjen my view on dump mining is this is more likely a consideration in the remediation phase of climate and ecological repair. It will only work when ‘planned obsolescence’ goes away and truly sustainable practices can be engaged.

I am dreaming of a time when tailored bacteria can be used to process and separate previous waste into useable compounds for re-manufacturing.

I’m all for #recycling, #reusing, and #reducing waste.
