One of the most fascinating papers of the year for me is a study that used oxygen isotopes to track season of harvesting of top snails and limpets by Neanderthals in what is now Spain, 115,000 years ago. The researchers found the snails were mostly harvested in the winter months. There are many possible reasons, including that Neanderthals might have moved inland to hunt terrestrial animals in the summer, sticking to the coast in the winter. But interestingly, summer is a time that modern Europeans avoid consuming some species due to the risk of harmful algal toxin contamination, and the snails also might have been more palatable in the winter to Neanderthals, as that is the season they're bulking up before spring reproduction. Has "Mastodon" become a category name, rather than a product / brand name? In a similar way "Jeep" became a category word for "all-terrain vehicle".
So often I see people use #Mastodon, where they refer more broadly to #fediverse. And I think "How about all the other fine #microblogging apps other than Mastodon?"

"Mastodon" is a registered trademark owned by Mastodon GmbH. It would be very unwise to try to use it as a category name, because the trademark might one day end up in the wrong hands. (In case people want real world examples of this happening in the FOSS world, trademarks are why Jabber lost its name and ended up being called XMPP.)
"Fediverse" isn't owned by anyone, isn't used in any other context, and it is already in wide use on the network. It's a much better option for the overall network's name.

This is why, when people say things like "omg the LLM can generate an embedded kernel for me!!!" I can't help but think
"Yeah, it was trained on _at least_ three of mine, plus immeasurable training load on my webserver serving the docs."
By claiming ownership of the result, or even just claiming to have managed the machine while it spit it out, you're basically just stripping all attribution for the actual work that went into its inputs. You might as well just clone my repo, remove the license, and remove my name. So no, I am not impressed.
