The ICC strongly rejects US sanctions against the institution

Today, the United States has imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court as an institution. This unprecedented step follows a series of designations against thirteen independent Judges and prosecutors who serve the cause of justice. ICC rejects US sanctions against the institutionWatchDownloadThis measure targets an independent judicial institution, created by treaty and entrusted by 125 States Parties with investigating and prosecuting genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. It is an attempt to obstruct the course of justice and to prevent the Court from doing what it was created to do. It is an assault on the rule of law and on the very foundations of the international legal order which strikes at the simple principle that no one stands above the law.The designation is aimed at disrupting the Court’s operations and at intimidating those who work for or cooperate with the Court. The Court, for its part, will not be deterred. “The Court will continue to fully discharge its mandate, with independence and impartiality, acting only on the basis of the law and the evidence, for the sake of the countless victims of grave crimes” said ICC President Tomoko Akane. Yet the Court cannot stand alone. Its fate now rests also in the hands of the States that created it. The Rome Statute is a collective promise that the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole must not go unpunished. That promise is only as strong as the resolve of those who made it. There may be challenges. But, together with its States Parties, the Court has made considerable efforts to ensure the continuity and resilience of its activities. The Court calls upon States to continue taking concrete actions, including to ensure that the Court continues to have the necessary means to continue its work. This is not just about defending a single institution, but about safeguarding the international order grounded upon the rule of law. No one should be punished for serving the cause of justice. History will judge this moment. Future generations, and above all the victims of mass atrocities, will ask how we responded when an institution created to protect them came under attack. They will ask whether the Court held firm and whether the international community defended the principles it proclaimed or allowed them to be abandoned under pressure. Streambank erosion degrades both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and riparian buffers are among the most widely used tools to control it. Yet most of what is known about how riparian vegetation controls erosion comes from one or two-species systems, which overlook the diversity of riparian communities and species interactions (competition and facilitation) that may shape the root systems that bind soil. We used a streambank mesocosm experiment to test whether plant species richness alters root traits, and whether root traits and species interactions reduce erosion. We established 85 mesocosms ranging from unvegetated controls to six-species polycultures, measured root biomass, length, volume, and diameter, quantified species interactions with relative yield totals (RYT), and measured erosion rate with a jet erosion test. Vegetated mesocosms eroded significantly less than unvegetated controls (t = 4.05, p = 0.023). Richness did not affect most root traits, although mean root diameter decreased as richness increased (β = -0.0225, p = 0.047). RYT ranged from competition (RYT < 1) to facilitation (RYT >1), yet neither interactions nor any root trait was directly associated with erosion rate. However, RYT was negatively associated with soil moisture (β = -0.196, p = 0.010). Piecewise structural equation models showed that erosion was best explained by a pathway linking species presence, root length, and soil moisture (AIC = 39.27; Fisher's C = 11.27, df = 12, p = 0.506). Panicum virgatum increased root length, whereas Lolium multiflorum and Echinochloa crus-galli reduced it; longer roots were associated with drier soil (standardized β = -0.31, p = 0.005), and wetter soils eroded more slowly (standardized β = -0.39, p < 0.001). Which species were present mattered more than how many, and plants were linked to erosion through soil moisture rather than root traits alone. Species selection for riparian buffers may need to consider effects on soil moisture as well as rooting extent, particularly as droughts followed by intense storms become more common under a changing climate. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. Some said this day would never arrive, yet here we are. I'm proud to say that my static website generator, Markerator, has just had it's first release at 1.0.0.

It reads in Markdown files, CSS themes, and images, and outputs a pure HTML 5/CSS static website. I've added documentation, examples, and documented the CSS file format so that folks can add their own custom themes. It currently ships with a default, and 3 other themes.

I just watched this. Highly recommended. It starts a bit slow IMO but lays out important history of eugenics in US academia going back to the 19th century. Stick with it.

By the end I worried about nightmares, not because #AI will exterminate humans, but because handful of [centibi/tri]llionaires has consolidated wealth, power, & data and allied with fascist authoritarians. Even worse, quite a few AI “leaders” are devoted to an insane fringe cult*.
