A couple people have reached out to ask why this feed has been silent lately. The short answer is that life has been using me as a speed bag. It sucks, but I'm still alive, so at least there's that.
But I don't want to talk about that. What I want to talk about is a book I've been reading as all this has been going on: "Perley's Reminiscences," an 1886 publication by the pioneering American political journalist Benjamin Perley Poore.
You really can't understand its flavor without seeing its full title, though: "Perley's Reminiscences of Sixty Years in the National Metropolis, Illustrating the Wit, Humor, Genius, Eccentricities, Jealousies, Ambitions and Intrigues of the Brilliant Statesmen, Ladies, Officers, Diplomats, Lobbyists and other noted Celebrities of the World that gather at the Centre of the Nation; describing imposing Inauguration Ceremonies, Gala Day Festivities, Army Reviews, &c., &c., &c."

Nel 2020 il titolo Call of Duty: Modern Warfare presentava un livello chiamato "Autostrada della morte": un agente della CIA doveva sconfiggere un gruppo terrorista e una milizia russa. Il livello, ambientato in un luogo fittizio, fece però scalpore perché presenta molte similarità con un fatto omonimo realmente accaduto; con però la differenza che a commettere i crimini di guerra furono gli Stati Uniti.
Quest'anno la scena si è ripetuta: nel trailer del nuovo titolo Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, si vedono varie scene in cui la Corea del Nord bombarda aree civili mentre combatte contro Stati Uniti e Corea del Sud. Anche questa volta però se si guarda alla storia, nella guerra di Corea furono gli Stati Uniti a livellare quasi tutti gli edifici nel nord del Paese.
Dipingendo gli Stati Uniti come i buoni che compiono un male necessario, Call of Duty prende parte a quella che è stata definita "industria culturale": un'industria pensata per creare consenso e che sopprime la funzione critica della cultura. Negli anni infati l'azienda non ha celato i propri rapporti col Ministero della Difesa statunitense, anche a livello finanziario.

* Open AI has an advisory group of human mathematicians, which advised as recently as Sept 29 to release new mathematical results "as soon as possible", to minimize the time people might waste on solved problems.

* At the same time, the advisory group advised against "the use of proprietary internal models by AI labs to do mathematical research" because it "risks creating a two-tier system where labs outrun the rest of the field."
* These preprints were dumped in #arXiv just before Oct 1, when arXiv started enforcing a new policy limiting contributors to two submissions per month.
