@feralthoughts this offer is open to you of course
@mekkaokereke @lisamelton We’re talking past each other so I’ll leave it be. I’m sure you’re a great guy in person. Good luck, sincerely, and I’m counting on strong voices like yours fixing the destruction wrought by commercial social media and the monetization of outrage from the inside. 🤜
lowest effort rust crate. the method that allows you to optimize a dictionary for a given compression level is not exposed in zstd-safe so we are diving down yet another level of abstraction
wouldn't care except that the zstd c library says on the matter
* The statistics for each
* compression level differ, so tuning the dictionary for the compression level
* can help quite a bit.
which sounds important
why are people posting pictures of the "full moon" today? the full moon was yesterday, it's a waning gibbous today
@wxcafe pssh you're a waning gibbous
Life should be touched, not strangled. You've got to relax, let it happen at times, and at others move forward with it. ~ Ray Bradbury
FreeBSD networking is annoying. I have an LACP LAGG with a vlan on top. That vlan is bridged with a vnet into a bhyve vm. For some reason, the dhcp response packets aren't making it back into the vlan interface even.
Announcement: AltStore becomes a financial contributor to Fedify
We're thrilled to announce that AltStore has become a financial contributor to Fedify! This generous support comes as part of AltStore's broader commitment to strengthening the open social web ecosystem, as they prepare to become the world's first federated app store. Their investment in Fedify and other fediverse projects demonstrates a shared vision for building a more open, interoperable digital future.
AltStore's journey into the fediverse represents a groundbreaking approach to app distribution—connecting their alternative app marketplace with the open social web through ActivityPub. As pioneers who have already pushed Apple to change App Store policies twice in their first year, AltStore understands the transformative power of open protocols and decentralized systems. Their support will help Fedify continue developing robust tools and libraries that make it easier for developers to build federated applications. We're deeply grateful for AltStore's trust in our project and look forward to seeing how their innovative federated app store will reshape mobile app distribution while strengthening the entire fediverse ecosystem.

@regehr Was it Paria perhaps? That canyon is awesome. I got caught in a rainstorm there once and it was scary as hell
@andrewrk yikes!! I love the Paria area but it's too much driving. we were in the Escalante drainage, and it was like 6 hours from my house to the trailhead ugh
I've accidentally discovered something seemingly counter intuitive. I get much more done, and done at higher quality, if I just sit and relax and do nothing when I'm tired or stressed or overwhelmed.
All my life I've been called lazy and told to just push through it. If there's a hard deadline I may have no option but to just pushing through, but if not, if I can give myself some time and space (and not stress on it or feel guilty) then in time I will be full of energy and brain power to be productive. How did it not occur to me to try this before now? (Okay, okay, I know why it didn't. Still it would have been a grand bit better to have had this information oh, say, five decades ago.)
Capturing a conversation I've had with a number of people recently: the relentless attacks on DEI have forced people doing the work to carry on their efforts under other names, hearkening back to previous eras when so many movements have been forced to work silently. https://www.anildash.com/2025/10/07/dadt-dei/

Tedium’s David Buck: “The show means a great deal to me. Without it, I probably never would have become a musician, I never would’ve gotten into radio and, later, journalism, and I certainly wouldn’t have the sense of humor I have today.”
As you might have heard, Dr. Demento is retiring this weekend. Fortunately, I know an incredibly massive Dr. Demento fan.

The genius of fascism is that any political structure can host the virus and virtually any developed country can become a suitable home. Fascism talks ideology but it is really just marketing for power.

It turns out there's more to the SDL initializers then I thought, those were calls to internal wrappers!
Initializing the audio also involves registering a callback (in an Audio Source) to supply audio data from the emulator, as well as a buffer for that callback to read from.
Updating the audio (during the mainloop) emulates the sound system, & synchronously copies the data over where that callback can see it.
And there's a finalizer.
6/7!!
The joystick initializer also show a message box indicating whether it was successful.
The video initializer also configures the output mode, with its update routine invoking the correct routine for the machine we're emulating (and depending on whether we're skipping a frame) before carefully copying the output bitmap over to SDL with fullscreen & emulated lightgun input handled specially. And there's a finalizer.
Nothing more to say for the sync subsystem.
7/7 Fin for today!
@damian I have never considered sheet ghosts having mustaches. Great imagination (wonder where he gets that...)
