Not what I wanted last thing on a Friday night: a flood of #MediaWiki spam account creations and user pages created on archives.org.au. My own fault really for having a super simple captcha (now updated), but it's worked fine for a decade or more. I should probably just move on with retiring this wiki.
@jamesgaunt No, only in fits of annoyance perhaps! Sometimes it feels like keeping websites online these days is just becoming more and more of a fight.
Of course, in this situation it's not really too hard to fix (I think you're right, just turning off account creation sorts it — for freopedia.org we're using the ConfirmAccount account extension, which is probably all it takes). I think it's just the feeling that we're feeding the AI machine more than humans, that's depressing!
@samwilson yeah I agree with you. It’s unclear who small websites are for now, us or the machines.

@samwilson ugh, that's annoying, had a similar experience last week -.-
@chriscz Did you get it all sorted out?
@samwilson i ended up just blocking new account creation on mine. I got sick of spam accounts getting around everything I did to stop them. I think your wiki is a good idea, are you really thinking of retiring it?
