When the kittens were small, I thought my fist was roughly cat-head sized and shaped and so might be easier for them to relate to than an entire human, so I’d hold out my fist for them to investigate and get comfortable with. And it worked. Except friendlykitten has developed a habit of not just sniffing it but full-on headbutting my finger with his nose. Walks up, sniffs fist, hits closest finger as hard as he can with his nose, then consents to scritches. This cannot be good for his nose.

He’s also basically full cat sized now. I might have to stop calling him a kitten.

@david_chisnall They're funny when they see a human for the very first time, just after opening their eyes. They do a fantastic little double-take. "OH MY GOD, YOU'RE ENORMOUS!"

@david_chisnall with a sample size of n=2, I think this is normal cat behaviour. My current 10-year-old cat will butt her head against my hand if I offer it. My previous cat, who was very nervous when first adopted, could be lured out from hiding by an outstretched fist to bump his head on.

@david_chisnall my grown-up cat also loves head-butting my fist. And one of my prior cats, who was initially very scared of humans, could be lured from hiding with an extended fist. So for n=2 I’d say cats like bumping their heads on fists.
