3 UK universities have now discontinued Turnitin as a result of their plans (past, present, and future) to train AI models using student data.

I guess that’s good, but TurnItIn has always been terrible even pre-‘AI’. I first had to use it for the first university course I taught just under 20 years ago.
I tested it by uploading a copy of the course notes. It said they were 70% plagiarised. This surprised me, but I then went to see what they were plagiarised from and it turned out that they’d found the copy of the same PDF on the course web site. So two bit-for-bit identical PDFs showed up as only 70% copied. In student work, it had no idea about context and so flagged every properly-cited quotation as plagiarised.
