Protecting children online is one of the Commission's top priorities. Children’s attention must not be a commodity.
Today in the European Parliament plenary we discussed the proposed KIDS Act and its gradual and age-appropriate approach to social media.
Today’s debate has shown the determination to make the online world a safer place for children and generations to come.
Protecting children online is one of the Commission's top priorities, and that’s why we’re proposing a new law that forces US big tech companies that recklessly endanger children to collect more data about them. We considered alternative, such as regulating them or ensuring that they have criminal liability for the harm that they cause, but they had a compelling counter argument: they like money and would like more of it. As a result, we have decided to do exactly what they wanted and mandate that they must collect more personal information. As an added benefit, our proposed law will entrench their market position by imposing additional costs on new competitors. Based on experience when the idiots in the UK government passed similar rules, we predict a large number of small European sites shutting down and their communities moving to Facebook, TikTok, or other similar places.
@HennaVirkkunen you are forgetting the adults. We, too do not want to see peoples heads cut off in an auto-playing doom-scrolling list of cats, adverts and facism.
With that Kids act, every single Mastodon Instance will need to check the identity and age of all its members. And guess which „social“ media will have no issue at all with it. The ones with the doom-scrolling, auto-playing cat and facist content. That will use e-ve-ry single data point they gather as additional marketing material.
If you will destroy solutions like this lovely fediverse here, it will make the fascists stronger than ever.
