PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR DIASPORIC POLITICS #4318642:
If someone feels familiar to you in the way you are trying to build/live a diaspora around, assume you know-someone-who-knows-someone-who-knows them. If you're having an extended conversation with them, try to figure out what that chain is -- share what places you've known fellow-people in, learn and be interested in what places they've known fellow-people in.
(If you find a chain -- success! you won the game and you have a deeper and more meaningful connection with not just that person but with everyone in the chain.
If you don't find an existing connection -- also success! you didn't win, but now you know someone in a network-location of the diaspora you didn't before, and so will have more directions to play the game in with the next fellow-person you meet.)
And as a PS, /you do this sort of thinking already, probably/.
You just maybe do it only for celebrities and news-events.
"Oh, yeah, the cool trans hacker who popped the US No Fly list, yeah, fun fact I'm in nearby social circles with it."
"Oh, that crime/tragedy that involved a group of trans women? Yeah I.. uh.. one of my friends knew someone adjacent to that. They're taking it hard."
"I was actually at a meal and a few social events with that musician!" "One of the people at my local meetup knows someone who was doing rocketry programming during Project Mercury."
You HAVE those threads, those connections! You notice them for things that get labeled as Important.
But the person you're talking with, connecting to over this shared diaspora, IS important! So the same moves -- find what threads are coming from you, which ones you can point towards them. Both of you reaching out towards each other.
Try it!
