Lost a bet with a friend so I had to propose this for #40C3
(Chances are not great, there is a lot of history between the CCC and me.)

title: A new model: Convivial software
abstract:
For decades we have been grounding our infrastructures in free and open source software stacks. But where corporate accumulation and embrace has put pressure on that idea, "AI" is really throwing a bomb into what we thought could be the future, splitting communities in half and cutting off pathways for rejuvenating the communities.
Open Source Software has succeeded. And that success created its biggest failure. Where can we go next? What's a better future?
description:
In this talk I want to explore what I mean when I say "Open Source has failed". Walk through some of the core assumptions that the movement was built around and argue that we've sadly landed at a position where "contributing to open source" can often mean "working for Amazon without a paycheck".
But even without the economic perspective I think it is revealing to look at the conversations around "AI", the arguments pro/contra and what they say about how "Free and Open Source Software" is seen in very different ways.
I'll close with what I suggest - for this community - to be the next step: Convivial Software built by communities as a shared human and humane activity based around need, awareness about the relationship to the bigger world and the radical embrace of each other's value and dignity. Software as democratic, antifascist and communal practice.
How can technologies, especially community built technologies be the model for how to create a better world and at what cost? What can we as technologists contribute and where are our limitations? What are we willing to give up in order to make a better world appear?
