“You have to return the #books, but you get to keep the ideas.”
@Sheril Silly question: is this an AI-generated visual? Thank you!
@Sheril @notjustbikes credited somebody else but I first heard it from him: imagine if libraries didn't exist, and somebody proposed them today, how the media, the rich, free market fundamentalists and conservatives would react to the idea, and what they would predict it would lead to.
Then think about everything else they talk about, their claims and predictions on everything from transport to taxation, and realise they are probably about as wrong on those things as they would be on libraries*
*not at all a direct quote, just my paraphrase of the sentiment
@Sheril They don't even get mad if you don't return the books. You can just oops sorry and finally bring it back after they finally charge you for it and they're like OK, thanks.
@Sheril - I always encourage everyone to support their local library. I think the library is a fundamentally important pillar of any free, open, democratic (in the philosophical sense), and decent community.
