As I write these toots, MPs are speaking in Parliament. Specifically, Junts is defending the rentiers and has warned that it will vote ‘no’.
And the protesters are outside Parliament.
Pedro Sánchez’s government has announced that it is considering bringing forward the general election.
And the protesters have organized large demonstrations in every city across Spain to call for a general strike and a rent strike.
Let me explain an important contextual detail:
During the 15M movement, we also considered going on strike, but the youth unemployment rate was so high that it wouldn’t have had much of an impact.
Now young people are in work; the problem is that they can’t afford the rent.
So a general strike would indeed bring the country to a standstill.
