That's a great question and I'm glad you're thinking about things like this, but there's a lot of things you're not aware of right now that would help you understand the answer. I'll explain it more when you get older, I promise. Now why don't you go play on the swings. I'll be here on the bench while you do, okay?"
@toddmedema - That's a wonderful way of explaining a scientific or technical question.
But how do you explain to your child that your child's lengthy in and out stays at the hospital caused so much financial stress that Mommy and Daddy began fighting and growing terse with each other? That the long days apart, tending to the needs of the child, allowed a gulf to be created between you two? That you two should never have had a child to begin with, that you only attempted it to show that you both took the marriage seriously. But now, sitting in that park, struggling to answer why the three of you never spend time together to a child who only sees beauty in the world and wants to know why she doesn't feel whole within the family, you realize that you would never trade it for anything. That while the child, through no fault of her own, destroyed what was left of a marriage, being here with her and seeing her life blossom makes everything right. You'll find a way to answer her question. You won't lie to her. But you want to make sure she understands how much each of her parents loves her and how she is everything to them and how, despite it all, life will go on.

Me: "Well, the lights turned off because the electricity went out, probably because it's so hot and the electricity utility didn't invest enough in energy storage or energy efficiency rebates because they're investor-owned and prioritize profits over people, so they're doing rolling blackouts to prevent everyone from losing power at the same time."
