@jensimmons I think our blocker is the design team doesn’t design with dark mode (or other accessibility concerns, like dynamic type) in mind. We go back to them on their native designs with this all the time.
@jensimmons For a basic site that just follows the system preference for dark/light via `prefers-color-scheme`, no problems! Where I find friction is trying to respect `prefers-color-scheme` in an app with multiple dark and light theme options. I have found patterns that work, but it doesn't seem as though there is an agreed-upon best practice.
I always try to support dark mode. But it's difficult to use dark/light mode on product landing pages because it changes the general mood very much. Design-wise challenging to keep the same effect with both dark and light modes (except, if your main design already has a dark background). Also creating separate visuals for each mode is another workload.
@jensimmons basically : more work for designers, more work for PMs whenever testing anything, a bit more work for developers. And a nontrivial amount of initial work for setting it up on all existing interfaces.
All of that for a perceived gain of approximately 0.
Which makes me sad personally, but apparently our users don't really care much, so, hard to argue.
We haven't used it because our client doesn't demand it.
Seems pretty easy to implement and I would love to do it, but it is not our choice, really.
@jensimmons I wish Apple would make a gray mode! OLED displays have such high contrast that a gray mode would actually hit accessibility minimums for text contrast ratio, so a gray mode isn't just a silly idea anymore. I think light mode is too light and dark mode is too dark. I know some people try to turn dark mode into a "dark gray" mode but that doesn't really work either, a true gray mode would be a dream
@jensimmons yes, but only because I took the initiative and just made it happen (honoring prefers-color-scheme).
I felt emboldened knowing anyone how saw it had already opted in, and feedback has been great! 🌑
@jensimmons we had a great plan but it got cut from scope. Even with a bunch of our front-end using css variables and all the new fun stuff which would make support as easy as possible, we still couldn’t get it paid for. 😢 Devs were onboard, management said “meh”.
@jensimmons I’m mostly curious if there is a solid progressive enhancement fallback for light-dark that would just revert to a single mode for folks who may be running older systems or browsers. (Thinking managed platforms or folks with slower internet or older computers.)
@jensimmons it has never felt the most important next thing to do
@jensimmons I completely disagree with the dark/light premise in the first place. There were no issues until everyone started making their operating systems completely white.
