Thinking about this talk (thanks @douwe) - I can't help but think 2 things:

1 - What needs to change to ensure that public organisations like a city council is able to pay/fund groups like Mastodon (as Douwe says, I think for bureaucratic reasons, they couldn't pay *anything* to Mastodon, but they do pay Microsoft (Big Tech) large sums without issue $$$.
This feels incredibly wrong. What has to change so they can receive this funding? (I guess some legal change is required - so could a business entity be setup that would then donate those funds to Mastodon?)

2 - Could someone create a directory/database of city councils, pulling through their social feeds, and flagging those which aren't active on the likes of Mastodon?

And then publicly we put pressure on those, requesting that they stop fuelling Big Tech with their updates, and thus start adopting and engaging with the likes of Mastodon?
This could be as simple as Mastodon or Fediverse people politely emailing/pestering local councils, asking them to make the switch.

(speaking for myself - local councils here are all using Instagram, Facebook... why is Mastodon neglected?)

I personally think this is a nice way we can push back against Big Tech in a fairly meaningful & productive way.
