I am agnostic. Still, I believe that, deep down, people are fundamentally the same, and it's only the cultural, social, and technological context that differs - not human nature.

And that's what I am trying to emphasize in my translations of German folk tales. The people who told these stories might have led different lives than we do, but they are ultimately not so different from us, and we should try to be empathic and attempt to see the world as they do when we read their stories.
