Finally, I understand what makes Quote Posts distinctly useful. Another way to describe them would be Boost Comments.

Anyone who's followed my account for any length of time will have noticed that I'm constantly quoting bits of the posts I'm replying to ...

... in case the people reading it can't see the post I'm replying to (there can be a range of reasons for that). I now understand that Boost Comments that notify the OP are another way I could do that, ie Quote Posts.
