There's a quote that always comes to mind, from Bujold-
"That's right, don't raise the barrier, lower the wall..."
Like, providing a slightly easier path, a way to save face, is worth more than forcing someone to actually say I was wrong explicitly, most of the time.
Just one of those quotes that runs through my head ( it's internal monologue while the character is negotiating)
Also it is a rare mainstream depiction of a person turning christofascist and then by the end, being slightly de-radicalized
